Generally in October as its getting cold I have good luck trolling in 12 feet of water, or dragging suckers and throwing a glider that will work 5' down. So saturday I did that all day with no luck other than one rip trolling in 18 feet of water with a DDD. It was getting late so I figured I might as well throw a topwater, nothing else worked. Right before it got dark I caught a fish on a 9" doc throwing in an area that went from 10 to 18 feet. I've never had that happen before. The water temp was 53 degrees and it was 5 minutes from being pitch black outside. It was nice to catch a fish on a topwater after missing at least 20 in my life. (never hooked one on topwater)

Anyone here throw topwater in the fall?

The day the season closes, that's when it no longer becomes an option. Had them eat a surface bait in 38 degree water temps.

We had a fish swirl on a weagle sunday. I wasn't throwing it, my partner was. I couldn't throw it because all I could throw was a bucktail since my bucktail reel was the only reel that was not FROZEN!

I throw them opener to close, no wrong time to use topwater. I have taken fish in water less than 40 a few times when nothing else would work. I find when you get a really warm day late in the season this a highly under utilized presentation.
