| I am in the market for a lure retriever and looking for opinions of those who have them. I see 2 in the rollie and hellens catalogue. A 12 and 18 footer made by Frabil. I was thinking of getting the 18 footer, but I am concerned about storage problems on the boat. The 18 footer reduces to 82 inches while the 12 footer reduces to 58 inches. My boat hasn't been delivered yet, so I am at a disadvantage there (ranger 619). Are there others out there to look at? Any comments would be appreciated. Thanks. |

| Believe me, I have tried just about all of them, since I fish a lot of stumps, and the best one I have found is the one that Jerry Borst makes. It is not a telescopic one, which almost always bend and break, it is a super heavy thing that slides over your line and has hooks and chains on it. It is attached to about fifty feet of line and spun on a marker buoy(spelling??). I have never lost a lure with it in the last two years!!! His email address is [email protected] and phone number is 815-351-4241. You will really be glad you got one of these!!

| Also, super easy for storage since it is wound up. |

| I use a similar lure retriever. However, I've attached mine to a retractable dog leash with a 20 foot leash. This is easily stored and if the lure is over 20 feet deep, chances are you're not getting it back!

| Ditto on the JerryB retriever. I traded him for it at the swap meet in Chicago, although I have never used it, it is very compact and retrieves deeper than 18'. Might come in handy next month at the Cave. |

| I picked up a Frabill lure retriever from the Milwaukee Musky Show. It is the best lure retriever I have ever seen. It is telescopic. Collapses down to 81"(6'9"). The handle is 1-1/4" in diameter with a nice grip on the end. The entire pole shaft is knurled to give you a good grip no matter where you grab it. It extends out to 18' and is solid. This thing is a brute!

| I use a hound dog brand lure retreiver. Keep it on 100 pound test line on an old reel stored in the boat. Hasn't failed me yet.

| Thanks to all who have purchased my heavy duty lure retriever!
I ran into Gregg Thomas on the water Sat; he told me that he just loves the retriever which gave me an idea,,,,
I would like to extend a discounted price to those of you who are going to Cave Run on March 21st. Cave Run is loaded with trees, stumps and rocks,,, that will surely reach out and grab your lures. If you recover 2 baits,,, this retriever will have paid for it's self. The retriever is compact and easy to use. In order to smash through the tree branches it takes "WEIGHT" This is the only retriever that weighs in at close to 2 lbs. For $25 plus shipping. I assure you this will be the last retriever that you will ever use. I have attached a picture (not the greatest,,, but any way)) and can be reached at [email protected] Thanks and good luck at the Cave, jerryb [:praise:] |

| I’ll toss my vote out there for the Frabill. Since I got it two years ago I have only lost one bait to a snag, and that was because I was lazy and thought I could get it without the retriever. I used to loose 3 or 4 a year in the stumps. I got the 12 footer because of space restrictions at the time. I am strictly a caster and have never had a bait stuck deeper than what I could get with the 12 footer. But I am sure that situation will arise sometime. If it starts to happen a lot I will have to get the bigger model, now that I can store it.
If you are consistently snagging baits deeper than 20 feet the retriever that slides down the line is for sure the way to go.
One more advantage of the Frabill is that you can also retrieve baits that are vertically challenged. If you fish a lot of shoreline with inexperienced casters, this can save you a few baits also. Example: I was fishing a shoreline on Lake Tomahawk with my father-in-law. This was like the second time he had been musky fishing. I snapped on a Top Raider for him, thinking it is fool proof, for a beginner. Fifteen minutes later it was 20’ up in a tree. He tugged on it rubbing the line on the branches, until the line broke. This was late July. That next winter I got the lure retriever. It was a year we had early ice out. In early April I convinced Oneida Esox to go on a mission with me. We launched the boat on Lake Tom and found the tree with the lure still hanging in it. With the retriever extended fully and John standing on his seat, I kept the boat in position and he hooked the bait with the coil and got it out. If it would have been 1 foot higher we wouldn’t have been able to reach it. But we got it and with that one lure the retriever almost paid for itself. By the way 9 months in the tree and all the bait needed was some new hooks and it was ready to go. It takes a whoppen and keeps on ploppen. Sorry…..couldn’t resist.
Good luck and Nail a Pig!

| You luck wasn't the height of the lure or the length of the retreiver...
Your luck of the day was that Oneida Esox has the height of an NBA All Star. I would pay top buck for a picture of John, standing on the seat, reaching for the lure...

| I like the Frabills. I don't have the problem with tree stumps, but with rocks, and shore line trees. The typical problem is a cast with a bucktail a little too close to shore, or a backlash that lets a bucktail settle to bottom. Once in a while a cast will end up half way up a tree on shore, like MRoberts. It's now stuck on something that is very hard for me to get my boat near.
The long pole type let me get lures that I would never be able to get with any other type of retriever, as it's not only a retriever, but also a pole. It saves lots of gell coat on the bottom of the boat. It's a very handy tool to use to push off the rocks that I'm about the crash into.
Also works for getting Jakes stuck in the rock while fall trolling. Pete Maina thinks I should get rid of these things, as he says it's hurting lure sales!
The Frabills work great!

| I really like the 18 foot Frabill retriever. It fits perfectly in the bottom of my Esox Mag. This little gem has saved me hundreds of dollars in lures.
One thing that nobody mentioned was the fact that the Frabill retriever can actually put more fish in the boat. The reason is that I now throw different types of lures into areas where I didn't dare throw them before. I am not afraid to throw crankbaits and big jerkbaits right into heavy stumps and flooded timber, where before I would only throw topwaters and spinnerbaits. These types of lures can sometimes trigger fish in areas like these because it is something that they haven't seen before.
And yes, it was one hell of a sight seeing me up on the seat of my boat reaching for MRoberts Topraider!!!
