I was out at a river spot fishing this weekend and spoke to a guy that was sucker fishing in the river (three lines). He had a hit and set the hook and reeled the fish in only to have it come off because he was using a single hook swallow rig and the fish never had the head in its mouth.

I spoke to the guy about the rig and why he was using it and he said that given that he had to cast the lure from shore to get the sucker out far enough, a single hook rig was the only way he could cast and get the sucker out far enough.

The spot is a decent fish producer and I would love to fish suckers there in a few weeks but don’t want to use a single hook rig. Any ideas?

go with a quick strike rig,use regular trebel hooks and do not straighten out one of them.hook the sucker deep,as far as you can get the hook. You can cast a sucker as far as you want,go with a side arm sling cast. The only down fall is the hook set,you will still have the sucker to contend with.Good Luck,Paul

Why not have a quick strike with the nose hook? Having the leads of the single hook to one or two trebles? Good thing he is on firm ground, he going to need to set the mother real HARD!
