Will this fish live.

One of my clients (some folks might even know this guy) a few seasons back caught this muskie. The fish looked like it had been dropped. The head and mid section on the one side was yellow and had no color.

Its my understanding from looking at the fish that some other fisherman before us had dropped this fish. Do you think it will live, it did eat a topwater so that was a good thing to see.

What type of abuse can they handle?

Check out the photo attachment.

Jason I had a fish a long time ago that I was afraid did not survive due to the abuse it suffered from myself. [:((]

This was when I was still a rookie and not used to holding onto very large fish, this was my forth 30 pounder in one hour and it measured a nice square 50 X 23. Back then I handlanded all my fish and as I lifted it into the boat for a picture the fish trashed and I held on for dear life so not to drop it into the boat but as I did my fingers made it through the membrade and created a very large hole. Now this fish was released but took a very long time to just swim on top and into the shallow water. I did stick around for a while so that it did not end up in a walleye fishermen's boat but still did not feel good about the release.

Well that was till 4.5 years later when the same fish was caught by one of my clients. You will see by the pictures that the scars on the side of the fish are the same in both photos.

Now this is as good a time as any to tell eveyone that catch and release works and a lesson I learned that day is when you lift a fish for a picture make sure you stay on the side of the boat and be ready to drop it into the water if you have too. [:sun:]

Jason: I don't think this odd coloring is from the fish being dropped at all. It appears to just be a lack of pigment in that section of the fish. I have many photo's of "esox oddities", including weird colors or lack thereof. Would love to have a copy of this photo if you have an extra.

Muskie regards,

I think Larry nailed it. The ones that worry me are the one's that are swimming around w/ fungal infections . Lat trip to Canada, On a trophy walley lake, I saw a 40" pike that was almost completely covered with fuzzy fungal growth and couple others that had patches on them. Even though it was following my lure it certainly wasn't going to survive to a ripe old age. I assumed this was from miss handling walleye fisherman & removal of the protective slime. This leads me to another subject which I'll post separately- BTW: Pretty fish!

Larry I would be happy to send you the pic. Just email me your address.

Pewaukee is a high preasure lake, many fish are recycled all the the time. This fish had perfect coloring over 70%, except the mid section and head on the one side.

Really looks like the fish was dropped on the head and up section of the body. I have seen this before on a few fish, but they were yellow all over and really beat up.

I sure hope not. I couldn't imagine bringing something like that in.
I thought catching a Burbot(Lawyer) ice fishing was bad.
I think I would have bad dreams after a SeaWolf. Should be called SeaMonster!

it tasted good though! LOL Ah, we only took two or three fish each day to eat in the evening. All the rest were released to be caught another day.

I love catching mackerel and coalfish, even cod when I'm in Norway. These coalfish (black fish with white belly) are so strong, they are like pike smashing a lure in the spring. BANG!!!!!!!!!!!! I had a ball several times catching these when they were feeding on a shoal of herring. Man, do they fight hard. And I'm talking about fish of 60cm! Salmon are squad compared to this fish.
