Hi everyone,

I have been fishing Cass Lake in the fall for almost 10 years now and it seems as if the last few years fishing has been really tough. Anyhow, I am entertaining the thought of changing lakes for my fall trip and wanted to get some ideas from all of you on whether I should stay at Cass or look to another lake in MN or WI. Cass is about a 12 hour drive so the shorter drive to Wisconsin might be nice. You might ask if we are after trophies or numbers. I would say both. We would like to catch some fish with the possability of a 50"er.

Appreicate your input,

Niel

You might want to consider Lake Namakagon (Cable , WI) or Grindstone Lake (Hayward, WI).
They are both decent bodies of water in the fall after turnover.
If you are looking for guide help you can't go wrong with either Tanner Wildes or Joel Tinker.
It is about a 7 1/2 to 8 hour drive from NW Indiana.
Depends on Chicago traffic and if you are hauling a boat or not?

10 years ago a resort owner on Cass told me that he has never caught a muskie past October 9th on Cass(I remember that date cause it's my Birfday). I do not know how much effort he put into it, but he was a very successful summer fisherman with numerous BIG fish to his name. I now live in Minnesota (formerly Palos Heights, IL.) and would not risk more than 2 vacation days (except for staying home and fishing the "Metro" lakes due to lodging costs) to fish on one of Minnesota's big bodies of water at this time of year. I would suggest that you cut the drive time in half and have the option to cast and drag a sucker (Not the protected June Sucker!) in the fine state of Wisconsin. North Twin did produce 2 50"'s in a WMT tournament this year that had less particpants than any of the big Minnesota tourneys. I've heard that Pelican has/had a fantastic "sucker bite" during the mid to late fall, and the fish I saw on the last day of the Hodag Challenge this year will keep me going back to the "Dead Sea". Pelican had a very bleak showing during that tournament, but I'm planning on burning vacation days in 2007 to participate in the back to back weekend tournaments next September(the plastic fumes from labor camp possibly might be affecting me!). The Barbee Chain/Webster in Indiana produced some exceptionally nice fish (mid to upper 40's) earlier this year. Much closer of a drive, but I hear the muskie fisherman traffic even during the weekdays in the late fall is something from "The Museum of the Hard To Believe!!" I would love to get a 45"+ and get a replica due to their fantastic thick barred bronze coloration, but not too precise to depict the Fuzzy Duzzit wounds in its keister due to the continual marionette show of jumbo Heddon Sonars. Please keep us advised on whatever venture you choose, and if you need information on Pelican Lake lodging or 3rd hand Metro reports, please feel free to drop me a line. Good Luck Dr. Niel!!
