Hopefully we won't have ice up til the end of November or better yet, early December.1st time on the Pond is going to be late Fall?Mille Lacs is a huge lake(132,000 acres) and can be very unforgiving, especially when "the gales of November come early".Can your boat handle 3 footers?More importantly, can you control your boat in 3 footers?Safety is a huge concern, because if you fall in this time of year, it can be life or death.Know what you're getting yourself into. Casting and trolling are both options this time of year.I might fish the stones a bit ,'cause those little silver morsels will be there getting their freak on.Baits include Mag Dawgs, Pounders, the 12" Suzy Sucker(AWESOME) and an array of crainkbaits, including the Slammer 10" Deep Minnow.A XXX will also be "welded" to a rod this late season.Good luck and do your homework. The rewards can be great if you do your research and the Muskie Gods smile. the way i fish it with my 16 foot Lund Alaskan is when i get to the south end of the lake and look out on the water and
if its windy there i drive to the north end and if not i put in right there and go for it, theres always a good place to fish
just be smart about it

Fred,
Didn't want to scare you off, and as was mentioned, you can always find relatively calmer water to fish.Give me a holler if you need any specic info. Steve

I would hire a guide for at least one day. If you can afford it, I'd leave the boat at home and fish exclusively with a guide. They have the experience and equipement to keep you safe at this time of year. I know it is more fufilling to catch fish on your own, but if this is your first trip to a huge body of water at this time of year, go with some one who knows what they are doing. It will be more beneficial to you in the long run to go on a shorter guided trip now. Late fall is a whole nother ball game and can be very intimidating. Don't get me wrong, I live for late fall fishing but you need to be prepared. The right clothing is more important than your fishing equipment. The investment in a guide now will pay off for years to come. They are on the fish everyday and will work hard to keep you safe and catch fish.

Greg Thomas is another good guide on Mille Lacs. If he is booked he can have you fishing with other guides on his staff-Luke Ronnestrand, Jason Hammernick and others. Give Steve Jonesi a call and talk to him some more.
