| the correct answer has actually been partially given...so look back over the previous answers, find one that would be worth monitoring with PIT Tags, and get the proper "common" name for it!
(note: you don't get credit for exhaustive lists of every kind of sucker you can google.) |

| So it's a "river sucker" and they're using the pit tag to track their movenents, spawning, etc.
WHY?
Could be pollution related, maybe studying a fish die off due to toxic algae blooms.
Am I close? |

| we have a winner: IAJustin!
June Sucker (Chasmistes liorus) is correct.
http://www.junesuckerrecovery.org/
http://www.junesuckerrecovery.org/pdfs/990625.pdf
notably, this is an endangered species which would be entirely inappropriate to use as bait.
(special thanks to Sorno, our resident fish biologist, for supplying the pic and info)
Justin - please PM me with your address and i'll mail you out a couple of Jerry Georgeson's custom sucker rigs as described in the article here: http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/articles/09.29.2006/1111/Suckers.Th...
