I've heard of graphite rods breaking b/c of cold weather. What do you use as a sucker rod when fishing in 30degree weather/what do you use for casting? Are there cheap alternatives out there?

I've always used my "broom stick" St.Croix 6' and have never broken one. I did break a 7' avid a few years back, but that was me being a dumb@ss. Alot of companies are making either cross breed glass/graphite sticks or glass sticks alone. I just bought a Fig Rig glass 7' XH and used it this past weekend for suckers. Heavy, but nice.

Ugly Sticks are a cheap alternative too. Casting? No. But as Sucker rods, sure.

Bill at Thornes (he's one of the owners and runs the rod building shop) told me that cold weather has NO effect on graphite. He agrees that more rods are broken in cold weather but it's because we're more careless and hard on our equipment when we're freezing our @sses off. I use my custom diamondbacks and avids right til ice up with complete confidence now.

I have been using my diamondback in the past, but after breaking 2 thorne brothers in November, I have started using my 8' Allstar Xhvy for bigger baits. Phil interesting about bill, he told me that using the high modules rods when it is 30 degrees is not a good idea for throwing bigger baits, and that is probably what caused my 2 rods to fail.

I use the G.Loomis rods designed for trolling for suckers and cold weather troling. They are graphite with added fiberglass for strength. Yes, they are expensive but I think they will last for years. I think there are some people out there using them for casting dawgs and big plastics. I think the stiffness of these rods helps with setting the hook when using quickset rigs and need to break the rubberband and then the hooks.

for sucker rods you can't beat 7-8' xheavy cat rods....or berkley makes a 7' saltwater rod with some serious backbone..they won't break...graphite i would not use for a sucker rod in cold temps

casting, I use my All STars til freeze up and beyond....

Break ice with the boat and cast the hole you just made?

well it's pretty simple...if the lake isn't completely frozen over..find hole and cast Bytor. what I meant was until freeze up and beyond here. simple.
just takes some breaking ice to get there.
