I have to go back east (home) for a funeral.

Mapquest takes me THROUGH Chicago, dont wanna ever do that again!

I did it years ago with a AAA Trip ticket and it went AROUND but cant find/remember the directions.

Can someone give me the path of least resistance?

thx much.

Off the top of my head, SB is just off 80, the toll road. Any way you go, you go around the Windy (Chicago). Be ready for stop and go anytime between 7:00am and 7:00pm as you go around the city. Saturday is lighter and you can breeze thru on most any Sunday morn or evening. Weekdays, well, it's the Windy and patience is required from morning till night. Your straight shot is 90 > 80/90 > 80 > South Bend. Have your change ready for the tolls. Your best bet is to avoid getting caught in 7am-10am and 4pm-7pm as you go around. If you have one, listen to the CB on 19 and ask the truckers what's moving best. I use a portable set up, magnetic antenna, plugged into the cigarette lighter hole, etc. I listen closely and so know the status of the traffic as I approach. You can ask for tips but be humble, big trucks, well, they hate most of us 4-wheelers and they get especially cranky as they approach any big city.

You can try going way south as you leave WI, but as you turn east you'll still run into all the traffic heading north from the midwest (55 and 57 thru IL) and splitting toward WI or IN. Better to be ready to stop and go right around the lake than go way south, turn left and still have to do stop and go. Best bet is to time yer trip right. If not, turn on the CB, take your time, and chuckle as the big trucks argue about politics and ethnicity.

Be sure to be gassed up as you approach the Windy.

Except for Sunday, ther's no fast way around the Windy.

Greg, this is the long way around but the least traffic. You can check the routes on mapquest.com for an estimated distance and time. I am not sure how much extra time it will add but it is country driving until you get to the south end of the Chicago area and almost into IN.

At Rockford IL get off of I90 and take I39 south to I80. Take I80 east towards South Bend.

It will be longer but the least amount of traffic and "city" driving. Also, you miss many of the tolls.

cimusky got it right greg, although you will run into some construction near the i 80 /294 merge by the ill/ind border after that its smooth sailin! or take 90 into 290 to 294 then that runs you into 80 also thats actually the quickest route it doesnt take you thru downtown it runs you on the outskirts of it and you will be on the tollway. shoot me a email if you want more detailed directions!! i travel it too often.
