Reproduction Question

One thing that I have noticed over the years is that the males are always so beat up after the spawn, and I wonder if this is from male to male competition, basically fighting over the females, or is it the females beating the crap out of the males. That is one thing that we never talked about in my fisheries classes in college, and I have asked several biologists and they didn't know for sure either. I know that the males try to stimulate the female by prodding her in the belly, and I wonder maybe if the female isn't ready, that she might turn and strike at the males. You can definitely tell that the muskies on Lake Kinkaid are in fact going through the spawning ritual when you see the males post-spawm. Someone is kicking there butt! Does anyone know who is doing it?

Not to infer anything from your post Chad, but have you had time to date much or had any long term relationships since you got into the musky thing heavy?

Those of us who have been married for a few years would never ask why the male musky looks like that.[]

Chad,

I think you are correct, Sir.All that I have read on this subject states that it is the male sparring that creates the wounds (on the males). And it is the male stimulating behavior that creates the wounds on the females.

Chad: Males have been observed "butting" females to, I assume, get them to lay eggs and females have been observed "biting" the males.
