boat cover tiedowns

I cut a larger tarp down to fit my 16 footer. Put grommets on the edges. Going to take it 250 miles north and want to keep it covered. What has everyone tried to hold their covers down, that were durable? Flat straps vibrate, what type of bungies last longer, rubber or those stretchy ones? Rope? Weave it under the boat? Thanks, Bruce.

Get the stretchy bungee cords that do not have the metal hooks. Hook it on the eyelet then the other end to the trailer. I bought a stearns cover for my brother's boat that has the straps, had to tighten sveral times on the trip, then one broke. I took them off and used bungee cords, no problems.

After discussing this with my bro in law, I think I will 'lace' it under with a rope. The idea is not to let air under the tarp when driving. Bungees would be quicker, I know. But for the length/distance of this trip, I want it to stay put. Thanks.

ropes work best in my opinion. tie to one grommet, then loop it down under the trailer frame rail and up through the next grommet in line, pull to cinch it up tight, then tie it off to itself.

if you go with bungees get the type like cabelas sells. they have plastic hooks and only stretch a little bit. you measure the length you need and buy accordingly. with regular bungees you'll get a lot of flapping because of the extra stretch.

I'm going to lace it with a rope. That is the way to keep it tightest to the hull. I was told in the spring that if i was going to tow it more than a few miles not to bother because of the wear on the cover. I'm putting duct tape under it where it will have more pressure on it like the bow and the oar locks, and the handles on the transom. My only concern is the fold of the tarp at the bow and what to do to keep it closed tight. It should be out of the slipstream though. Going to stop every so often to look it over. Thanks for all the suggestions. Bruce

Put a twist in the flat straps and vibration is GREATLY reduced.
