Acording to the Muskie inc. records this fish is so rare it almost does not exsist. I have to wonder if anyone has ever popped this rare sized fish.

Three years ago my partner and I got twin 49.5 inchers within two hours of each other about 150 yrds. apart. They were different fish the first one had scares and teeth jolting out like fangs we knicked her name Snaggle Tooth. We left the area and came back to different side of the island were we were raising a nice fish the past couple of days and this time she hit. She was a real pretty fish opposite of the first maybe alittle lighter, I tried my hardest to see if she would stretch to fifty inches but nope 49.5 was what she was. Both fish were released and went away healthy. A side note is that week we felt we raised six different fish in that area, we got one other a 41 incher. The next year I lost a nice one there and last year nothing moving there all week. Al[:sun:]

Must be because any fish of that size is stretched out to 50, just so they can call it a 50. My biggest is 49 1/4". It would have been nice to hit the 50 mark. But I'm not going to call it 50 unless I know it's a definite 50, not just close.

I did see a 49.65 once, it was hiding under a downed tree & stuck it's head out to look at my Husky Jerk.

Unfortunately it didn't hit either, so I couldn't report it. It seemed to be real shy. Maybe that's why they're so rare.

Is it really a rare fish, or are these fish being rounded up to 50"? I know when I measure a fish I don't take a lot of time doing it. If I know it is at least, lets say 48", it is considered a 48" fish. I only measure fish to the nearsest 1/2". This puts a lot less stress on the fish when they are out of the water for a very small amount of time.

I netted a 49.5"er for my dad last year. We measured it in the water, and got a good measurement. Just couldn't get 50 out of her. That was the longest fish ever in my boat.

LOL!

It's true, very few 49.5 or 49.75" muskies are caught. I however have the dubious distinction of being able to say that a 49.75" muskie is my largest.

Years ago, I used to work for a sporting goods store here in Rhinelander that was a receiving station for Al Smith Taxidermy. People would bring in their "50" to have it mounted. Well, I'd have to measure it accurately for billing purposes. I can't remember one muskie that actually broke 50"! You should have seen some of the ranting and raving that was done when the actual measurements came out! Some people actually came back with their own tape measures to check the measuring trough.

But, one thing that it did enable me to do is see lots of big muskies, giving me an opportunity to accurately "guesstimate" sizes better.

So, when I caught my biggun, I knew how to accurately measure it and the longest I could get it was 49.75 inches. So count me one of lucky anglers to catch one of these rare fish.[:p]

This has been said so many times, I can say that I am one of the fortunate ones to catch a 49.5 and going through my logs I noticed I have caught six 50 on the nose as well as six 49 inchers. Now those six 50 on the nose are a very small percentage on the 50+ I have caught. Doing the math from the 48+ post tells me I have forteen at 48 and 48.5.[:sun:]

One thing I know for sure diferent bodys of water can have different year classes of fish. I noticed in 2000 I had a very large number of fish 47 to 49.5 as compared to other years. This year was way more fish under 35 then ever before and in 1996 I had more fish over 53 then any other year. I am sure we have different year classes of fish proping up here and there that's for sure.

Maybe this can be a topic on the research board.

As for people stretching the tape on a 49.5 fish I am sure they know the truth. I for one measure to the nearest 1/2 inch, unless in a tournament as I want to reduce stress on a fish and would rather save the fish those extra seconds out of water other then having a measurement to the 1/4 of an inch. So maybe halh of those six 50s on the nose were 49.75 but then again half can be 50.25. Its a give and take I say.[:sun:]

What is the point of measuring a fish..... especially down to the 1/4 inch?

To me it is just a way to describe to another angler the GENERAL size of your catch. Was it big or small. There isn't a whole lot of difference between a 49.75 and 50.25 inch fish... other than the mystique people have placed on that infamous 50 inch mark.

The competitive nature of many musky anglers has gotten to the point of one guy trying to prove his 50 incher is bigger than another guy's 50 incher.... thus the GIRTH measurment. The only girth measurement you will get in my boat is a subjective comment of "wow that fish is FAT" or "Boy she's got a big head.... but pretty skinny".

I'll never catch a 49.75 incher because I'm like Trophymuskie.... and round to the nearest whole number..... sometimes that gives me an "inch" and other times it takes away an "inch". If you want to discredit a 49.75 inch fish I claim to be 50 inches.... so be it.

I'll end the way I started..... WHY do we need to measure fish at all?

I MAY NOT HAVE COUGHT A 49 1/2 OR A 49 3/4 BUT I CAN SAY THAT MY BIGGEST MUSKY TO DATE IS A 49 INCHER. I WANTED IT TO BE 50 INCHES SO BAD BUT ILL TAKE A 49 ANY DAY OF THE WEEK. THE 50 PLUS WILL COME SOON ENOUGH (I HOPE).

HAPPY HUNTING

I wish I could justify rounding up in my mind, but I cant. I have been 1.5 inches shy twice from the famous number we all look for. I use a flat stick (the correct way to measure) and until it says 50" after I pinch the tail...well I could never hold my head up.

Just a personal thing between me and fish I am trying to catch.[;)]

Unless I'm fishing with a client
that just "has to know", I very seldom measure my fish. One good
look and an estimate, is all I need. [:p]

Five of 18 over 48"s were over 49" but not over 50". [:((]

Hell, if you want to see 50"ers just watch TV, they are never measured, but they go back in as 50"ers. [;)]
