Location: Brookfield, WI | It was a little over one year ago that my family and I traveled north for a week on Big St. Germain with three other families. While organizing for the trip, the four men of the group decided that time should be set aside for fishing. As one of these gentlemen, not me, had the previous summer caught a musky under the guidance of a relative, that species became the target of choice. We knew very little, had hardly any equipment, and when all was said and done, very little time was spent fishing. Enough time had been spent, however, to coax two of the creatures out of the depths for a quick look around, after which they slid out of site with a twitch of their tails, a sight with which I have become somewhat familiar.
Water skiiing, tubing, swimming, and catching panfish with our families had been joyous and satisfying, but we left the north feeling that we had missed something, that something was lacking. Those two quick and mysterious glimpses had affected us.
Over the course of the next several weeks, phone calls were exchanged, ideas bandied about, possibilities and time frames contemplated. A Plan began to evolve.
I became the lead planner. First there was the initial research. To be worthy, the plan needed a final destination of some import. Where could four friends with what has stretched to become a 30+ year history, go for what could likely be a once in a lifetime musky fishing vacation?
Where were the ladies willing to dance? And not just dance, but dance with us. Where would they accept and forgive the clumsy, stumbling advances of four novice dancers? We knew it could not be just anywhere. We would need help, choreographers as it were. The research pointed to Andy Myers Lodge, Eagle Lake, Ontario. Could a less expensive trip have been planned? Without a doubt. All my research, however, pointed to AML as the place where professionals could offer the inexperienced an excellent chance at several turns around the floor.
It appears, especially if one can judge from pictures taken and posted over the recent weeks, that Eagle Lake dancing can at times be almost Rave like in its intensity. Many ladies have been willing to dance, but it is not the number of dances that draws people to Eagle Lake, but the quality of the dance partners. It is the mature ladies of Eagle that have the magical appeal. They are thick and heavy, but look to feel like only a feather when held in their partners' arms. Such is the power of their dance.
We leave Thursday around noon for eight days of dancing. My hair is cut, my shoes are polished. I believe my heart is pure, and my spirit humble. I go bearing thoughtful gifts, respectfully hoping that one of the Grand Dames of Eagle Lake will allow me to to spin her around that watery dance floor, and gently hold her in my arms as we both smile for the camera.

There was more to my plan than just organizing a vacation. The plan brought me here, and for that I am grateful. Thanks to those who have put up with my ramblings, taught me valuable lessons, and offered their encouragement. Thanks especially to those of you who call me your friend. You know who you are. Thank you MuskieFirst. This is a fun and educational place. Because of it, the Plan will live on long after this trip is over.
Tomorrow I better get a few things done.
