I have fished ABU exclusively for over 30 years, however the C4s, D5s, and tornos last about one/two seasons. I have them serviced annually, but they hit a point where they do not re-engage. I have mailed them to the company and they have done a great job of replacing them, but it is a pain that they do not hold up like the the red 5000 that is over 30 years old. Do they have a quality control issue and if so, what do people recommend switching to? Or is that very individualized?

muskyflyguy, you did not mention what species of fish you fish for,but since this is a musky web sight, I will presume you fish muskies. I to am a long time abu fan, and noticed the change in over all quality. I received a red 5500 ambassadeur as a gift back in 1979,still use it today. I then purchased a black 6500ca, the first year of the palming side plate in 1980. Yesterday, I was using that reel for muskies on the fox chain, after 26 years! I would have to say that its the best reel I have ever owned. When purchasing a new ambassadeur, be careful. Some of the reels are still made in sweden and some are "assembled" in sweden. MADE IN SWEDEN reels are still quality reels. Assembled in sweden means they may build them in sweden but the parts are from Taiwan. Its a shame abu has gone this route. Anyway, check out www.hatterasoutfitters.com. They sell reels still made in sweden. Check out the black 6500cl and 7000cl reels. Kdawg

This may be why they reworked the new ABU Records.......problems, problems, problems.

thanks kdawg. I fish musky with the 6500 C3s and C4s and use the C4 5600, tornos, and D5 as multi-purpose reels for bass, norhterns, and muskies. I wish there was a class on how to rebuildt ABUs. I would like to replace some of the components with better ones.
