Location: Valentine, NE USA | My neighbor is looking to buy his first boat...he's on a budget, etc., etc.
So, he knocks on my door this morning, and says a boat dealer showed him a 17'er with a very well running, but old, "82 Evinrude 140 on it.
FYI....this boat is only rated for 90.....
The dealer told him that some time ago, Evinrude "changed the way they rated their motors" and this motor was only about 85hp.
Now, I'm telling myself the dealer fed him a line of BS..... or could this possibly be true!?!?!?!

Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | Stay away. The omc motors from that era had oil injection. Also, if the sticker says 140 and the boat is rated for 90 you will have insurance/liability issues. |

Location: Eden Prairie & Pine Island | A few boats ago I had an Evinrude 90 that was really an 88 horse, but 140 to 85? I think the dealer is less than credible. |

Location: champaign, illinois | My guess is the dealer is referring to the fact that outboard hp ratings used to be done at the crankshaft and now they are rating them at the propshaft. So in theory, the earlier higher hp rating is actually lower at the prop. Regardless, anytime you put a larger hp motor on a boat than it's rated for you most certainly will have liability and insurance problems. Not to mention if you get caught by the Coast Guard or any authority who has jurisdiction over such matters in your area.
Stay far far away from any dealer trying to pull that stunt!

| Coast Guard won't do anything. The tag says Recommended Maximum HP. |

| An 82' with oil injection? Not to my knowledge. I believe the oil injection motors started in the late 80's . Sounds to me like you would be buying a headache. Keep looking! |

Location: Chicago, Beverly | insurance liability stuff as treats mentioned.. its my understanding that that motor was prop shaft rated, its motors in early70's and older that were not propshaft rated so its a 140.. good solid motor... but I would avoid that dealer for anthing if he is feeding people that line of bs.. been told by dealers that they CANNOT sell boat wth motor larger then rating tag(I asked, thats what I was told) due to liabiliy and other issues.. its probably ol injected, but the bad oil injection johnny/rudes were early to mid 90's not the 80's, those were the solid ones |

| I'm with Jay on this one. I have a 1977 Chrysler 120hp that would be destroyed by any 90hp motor made today. Maybe even an 80hp? They did rate motors differently a while back.
I used to be President of the Roughrider Bass Club in Fargo, and a guy in my club bought an Allison Bass Boat that was made from PVC, Marine Resin?, and something else. No wood at all. It was very light, and he had a 200hp motor on it. He bought 150hp stickers though, and coincidently, won every race against people with 150-175hp motors. Nobody knew the better. I thought that was a sweet boat, but he traded it for a Triton two years later.
As far as the original post, I think the guy's trying to "hard-sell" you on this one. Good luck. |

| In MO the water patrol will give you a ticket and tell you to take the motor off |
