What is the best metro ski lake? Lets keep it to a 50 mile radius on the twin cities.

I am partial to Forest Lake. My parents live on the lake and I am more familiar with the hot spots. Any thoughts?

What are everyone's thoughts on Eagle Lake in Maple Grove? too much pressure? too small of a lake? Stocking reports are intriguing...

The best metro lake for size, numbers and structure I would have to say Tonka.

I agree with Hook, In five years WB will be a hot lake.

Wish I had that problem, living in central IA there is only one lake that even has muskies in it within 50 miles When I lived in the TC area I fished Calhoun and Harriet quite a bit. Pain to fish, Calhoun esp but worth the effort.
Oh and eagle.... Nice boat ramp

Do you need a special permit to fish calhoun, harriet, etc? what does it cost? motors aren't allowed, so do you just use your electrical trolling motor or ?

YEah, yesterday was the first day I fished eagle lake... that access is a joke! The big lakes intimidate me too much, at least at first. So eagle seems like it may be easier to learn.
Any help would be appreciated, though...!

Eagle Lake in Maple Grove gets hammered. Its only a 200 acre lake, but will often have a dozen or more Muskie boats on it on a weekend. That translates into a lure going by each fish about once every twenty minutes. Needless to say the fish are highly educated and conditioned. They have seen it all many, many times. Its a great lake if you like to see fish. One can often get ten or more follows in an outing, but getting one to eat is another story.

The best metro lake? I think it depends on what one wants. If you don't mind dirty water and high numbers of easy to find fish is the priority, then Indy is a good lake for you. If you want to hunt for very large fish that can be anywhere on a larger body of water, then Minnetonka is for you. If you want a mid sized lake with good opportunites, there are many good lakes including Forest, Waconia, White Bear, and Bald Eagle just to name a few. Location can also be important for a lot of people.

There is no right or wrong answer. Its just a personal preference thing and will vary for each fisherman. It might even change for someone from year to year or even month to month.

I love Tonka, but thats because I live near it and love to hunt for fish and enjoy roaming around the lake. Others hate it because the fish can be so hard to find at times. I dislike Indy because of the dirty water and having to wash the boat every time I go there during the warmer months. Others don't mind that and there is nothing wrong with that either.

The important thing is to have fun. So pick a lake and go fishing is what I say.

Willis yes you do need or at least used to have a permit sticker on your boat for Calhoun and Harriet. Can't remember where I got them but they were free, and yes just use your trolling motor, good Idea to have extra batteries as well

Both lakes have cement pavillions or buildings,,the boat launch is right next to them,,on harriet it is right next to the outdoor bandshell....remember you CANNOT start or use your gas motor on these lakes

CSG
ive cheated once or twice too when a storm was comming,,,however the cops dont have to catch you in the acT running your motor all they need is someone to call on their cell and fill out a 'written complaint" when they come and you get ticketed,,this happened a couple years ago to the tune 0f $250 to one guy,,,Its a doubble standard the sail boat club gets to use motors on their dinghys to go out to their moored boats and also for setting up bouys for their regattas

Some of the local sailors and powerwalker/joggers have no common sense. One time I had a guy in jogger shorts actually step over the tounge of my boat as I was backing in. I dont know how many times I had to slam on my brakes out there from jogger/bikers going behind by boat as I back in. It seems like they are all idiots or think they own the lake.

I'm glad some guys out there feel the same way I do about the Birkenstock crowd around Harriett. I have runs in with a lot of people down there. Like the husband wife duo with there matching kayaks screaming at me because I am fishing. A quick jackpot six inchers from her boat shut her up real fast. I don't like to complain that much but it's part of the reason I haven't fished there since June.

About the motor deal. I don't run it much but you are fine as long as you don't confess. Even if it's a 240lb "woman" cop with a hair cut like Howe Long.

I completely agree with you guys. Its like, you really gotta walk where I'm trying to load my boat when you have all these other f@#*ng trails to walk on around here. Then the dirty looks you get for being a fisherman on THEIR little lake to walk around.
