Anyone use big baits? Curious if anyone has used large baits (14 inch plus) for muskie fishing and what type of luck you have had and with which baits.

I have tested the Muskiefool trolling baits, both the Mayeye and the SB Derby Diver... both run very well, shallow setting is 12' deep setting around 27' So far all I have done is test the bait to try and determine the dive curve, so have not had a chance to actually fish with it....

I do indeed throw large baits. I also have one less bait in my box But it is being replaced. The musky snax baits not only look fantastic but also have an incredible action......just dont let your friends take them for a test drive!

You should PM Capt bigfish. He regularly uses baits that are bigger than what most people use. 18"+!! He catches lots of fish and big ones to.

One of the fish that got him 10th in Vermilion tournament was caught on a Supernatural(18").

Only fished with people who own wishmasters. (and I lost one without hooking up...boooo) Their biggest fish have come from them 54 & 51"... I think it's more important in fall. During the Summer I try to match whatever size fish I'm imatating for that body of water. On a Lake that holds target bait species over the 14" mark I wouldn't be scared to try baits over 14"...IMO.

I recently found out about these large trolling baits. Each bait is hand crafted by a gentlemen in MN. I was truly impressed with the quality of these baits. My rig is not set up for trolling, but I am hoping to get out with a buddy of mine that does troll to give these baits a tryout. Here are a couple of pics, and the website is: http://www.gruntmuskielures.com

I use big baits a majority of the time...baits like the 12" Trueglide Tremor, 14" Muskie Snax sucker, 12" Muskie Treats, 12" Phantom, XXX, Ghosttail V, Plows, 14" Jakes, 13" Grandmas, 12" Slammer Minnows, and Pounder Bulldawgs...the Wishmaster craze has crossed my mind before but that was a moment of insanity...don't get me wrong, they are incredible baits, I just can't afford a $250 lure esp. after my rods being stolen...I love all the baits I mentioned above and in most situations would pick a big bait before a smaller version...

I picked up one from Dunnwright Tackle over the winter. My first BIG bait. Tried it out once. It likes to move nice and slow with an exagerated roll. It's gonna see a lot of water time this late fall and, hopefully, the inside of some fishes mouths.

At 13 oz I haven't really wanted to throw this 20" long bucktail all that much. I intend to try it as a throw-back or when going back to a big fish spotted earlier. I'll definitely post pictures if it ever works. Pls note the other bucktails in the photo are a Mepps #5, Mepps Giant Killer, and an 11 inch Eagletail.

We build and use very large cranks. Our Talonz Deepthreats have taken several Fish over 54 inches in the Georgian Bay area. I build 12,15 and 21inch models and the price is not as bad as the Wishmasters. HR Johnny Dadson trolls with one of my 21 inch Lake trout. We use the 12 inch models in Michigans deeper lakes where Whitefish and or Splake are target forage. Open water suspending Muskies are suckers for a 12" Brook Trout pattern. All of our big baits feature .078 wire thru construction acrylic paint and triple coats of Etec. Check out our website . Kingfisher

Got a hot pink 16 inch Grunt off of eBay about 6 weeks ago and got my first tiger muskie last week here in IA. Biggest tiger muskie I have ever gotten! ha ha A 34 incher over old fallen trees in about 20-22 feet of water. Not my first use of a big trolling lure but it was nice to finally get a tiger muskie! I will definitly be buying and using some other big baits this fall.

No Box(23") and MuskieFool(22") seem to have about the biggest baits I have seen, though I thought there was someone with a 24" somewhere... I have seen a couple Musky with what appeared to be fish roughly in the 20-22" range in their mouths.. a site to see for sure.... I guess those cats can get to around 80lbs or more and one thing I read is they hit lures.... sounds like a road trip is in order for them.... lol...

I have seen a 24 inch jointed but it was homemade and about 30 years old. It is screwed onto the wall at the Sportsmans lodge up in Ontario Canada now. The owner and his brother (who owns Anglers Kingdom) used to row troll it around the lake. They stated they did catch some monster pike (45-50+ inches) on it once in a great while. Days of rowing for one fish.

Just an FYI...

My MRG painted lures are in and they look great! Many have said to charge $60-$70 or more for these big trolling baits but I have kept the price below $40. I hope this is a good deal for all as I know cash is getting hard to come by these days for most (*Hence me making muskie lures!)These are handmade from American hardwood and only use top terminal tackle like Wolverine triple split rings, Mustad hooks etc.

Thank you for those of you who have emailed me with suggestions and recommendations for my site and lures. FYI-I only have one of each of the MRG color patterns right now but will have more of each soon. If I do not have "Sold Out" over the picture I still have it in stock. I do have lots of stock color patterns and jointed models and will not run out of those for a while. Making more as fast as my wife and kids will let me. email me with any questions.

Got a 10" Polish Pike last fall and had a 2 muskie day using them while casting. I like their action and they aren't too bad to cast. Some of the finish is coming off, but I'll take that when it means I've released a couple of fish!!! I know more fish will fall to it again soon!!!

If anyone wanted to try out a 16 inch Grunt one will be auctioned off on the Michigan Muskie Alliance -- Muskies, Inc. Chapter 47 site. Good cause for thier club and in general muskie fishing in MI. I would suggest that if you have anything to help you contact Kingfisher.

Great looking lures!

Question: What is the smallest muskie or pike you will catch with these lures? In other words, how big does a fish need to be before they will go after big lures like these?

Thanks,

Newbie-Greg,

Take the length of the bait X2 and that is where you will start

Use a 16 inch lure and catch 32 inch muskies and larger. Just my general rule of thumb and seems to be about right from the data I have found in journal articles dealing with the gut contents of muskies and pike. Not a lot out there on the subject though....

With that said I have caught pike smaller than the lures I was using while fishing in Canada.

What type of leader do you use for these baits? Trolled a 13'' believer and the snap came undone after 3 minutes of trolling.

I could not find the leaders on the Wishmaster website when I looked real quick, but here is a link to his website: http://www.wishmasterbigbaits.com/default.asp perhaps a quick email to Rolf will get you the leader info...

Correct email Rolf, he doesn't build many, so get the casting leader and trolling leader, both the best I have ever used

Not sure pn the weight of the wishmasters, but the Muskiefool Mayeye and SB Derby Diver weigh about 1.75lbs and are about 22", The Mayeye is on top, the SB Derby Diver on the bottom, the one in the middle is a Proto we are fine tuning thats a little smaller...the others are ready to go and have a dive curve from about 15' to 28' depending on which line tie you use, both have very good wobble..
