| I have a 100 pound test mono leader, 12 1/2 inches long. Should I have a longer leader, and should it be in steel, or mono. Because I read stores that when a muskie twists in the water it gets wrapped around in the gills and the leader was not long enough and the line got cut. What is the best leader to use?

| 174# wire for jerks and gliders
100# flouro for bucktails
some people use 7 strand for bucktails, others use flouro for everything.
Some will say no flouro under 100#
Some use 130#
Some only use 80#
some use snaps, others only use split rings...
You can drive yourself nuts trying to figure it out
Most important thing is use quality components (snaps/split rings/swivels), check them often, and replace them when they get damaged or worn.

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | addict has it right. I use piano wire, in .050 for near everthing but plastics, for which I use 7 strand in 60#. 12" shouyld be enough. if you get the leader too long it's tough to cast the thing. |

Location: Black Creek, WI | I use piano wire too... but much lighter than Worrall. I prefer 105# and 124# wire for all applications. Total lenght with snap and BB is 12 inches.
There will be a lot of varying opinions on this subject. Read them all and choose what feels right to YOU. |

Location: lansing, il | if you learn to do a nice uniknot you can run a 4 ft 100# fluoro leader with no problems then your covered..the longer the leader with a swivel, the harder it is to fig 8 as well. 12-14" is about the max for working baits close at boatside...18" is ok if you really concentrate on your work! |

| I use the 174lb for jerbaits and twitch baits but have switched to 90lb-100lb floru for the rest. One of my fishing buddies runs trips for tuna and they have never had a bite off...that includes many many mako sharks...If the sharks cannot do it, muskies can't. You just need to watch the material for knicks as you do with 7 strand and kinks in straight wire...they will all break, but bite offs...won't happend in the leader is in good condition...Ben |
