Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | I might have missed it, but BUG SPRAY! I've been to Canada and not seen a bug in 7 days, then one year got 14 bug bites on the walk between the truck and the cabin (10 yards). I would recommend "Bug and Sun" lotion, or the Skintastics spray.
Also, when its hot, water water water WATER. If you have more than you need, you can bring it home, but if you dont have enough, you'll either feel rotten from dehydration, or risk the camp water.
Personally, I try to pack enough clothes for it to be freezing all week, or broiling hot all week. You can always bring home clean clothes. |

| Seems silly, but I always pack a few essentials that most people don't:
1. an extra toothbrush
2. 1 complete change of clothes (stays in truck)
3. Extra pair of shoes (stays in truck)
4. a couple of them pills for when you get the sh*ts (it hasn't happened to me yet, but I can't think of a worse way to wreck a fishing trip that could be avoided)
5. plastic silverware
6. hunting knife (don't leave home without it)
7. spare hat (going bald -- all the suncreen in the world ain't enough to keep your head from getting fried)
8. tylenol/advil/etc -- never needed that either, but you never know
9. roll of duct tape (don't leave home without it) |

Are extra trailor bearing on the list?

Good one. I lost one on the way home last year...no fun at all. Luckily I was close to home. |

Location: Athens, Ohio | Extension cord for the charger, SPAM (since, you never know!); I'm guessing the hooks are sharp and the reels are oiled, else I'd be packing files and reel oil, too. Not packing any Playboys? must be a short trip from home. m |

| Extra batteries, starter for the boat, AA's for the camera / GPS. Extra key's for the boat, the lock on the boat trailer and for the truck. |

| birth certificate - not a copy. passport required in 2007 or 2008???
need special Canada Insurance card from your insurance company?
Check on health insurance.
medicine list --very important
phone call list for everyone going.
extension cords & plugin splitter
extra fuses for trailer lights....
extra battery /charger???
grease gun/grease
butt seat
tools - including extra bolts/nuts, screws, tape, etc.
insect repellent & Avon skin-so-soft & Vick's vapor rub (for flies)
fans ? alarm clock?
ear plugs....sometimes others snore....too loud...perhaps me..ha
A lot depends on where you are staying and who is going with you. I think you may find it important to check with your insurance company before going.
Have fun....

What with the Vick's Vapo Rub and flies? Does that keep them away? They were really bad last year in Canada, and I'd love to find a way to get them to stop biting my ankles.

Location: NEW LENOX IL | Not sure if this will help you out in Canada but when I go north I always bring 2 -6 gal plastic gas cans. With off water gas at over $3 a gal the on water stuff is $4 or more . I burned about 10 gal a day for 7 days = 70 gal or a $70 savings.
Also get yourself a blow siphon ,keeps your mouth and more importantly our lakes clean . I got mine at a merc dealer for 11 bucks.

Location: Contrarian Island | if you have an autopilot i'd take a spare foot pedal or 2...and if it's on a quick release plate and you can borrow a whole unit from a friend i'd do that too....never hurts to have a spare trolling motor.... |

| Get a jack for your truck/trailer....three pumps and she's high enough to change the tire. They are pretty inexpensive and when it's 100+ degrees out, or -7 degrees (I've learned from experience) out, it is so much safer, quicker, and easier!!

1) Spare props for outboard & trolling motors - Canada is full of BIG rocks
2) Headlamp - for hands-free light
Re-emphasize (in honor of a friend's hard experience) - spare car/truck keys maintained OUTSIDE of the vehicle at all times! |

Location: The desert | Good call on the spare key! When we went out with slamr we almost didnt get out cause the boat key blew out on the trip up....luckily he had an extra in the vehicle.
But I think you are going to need a semi trailer with the list we are compiling here!
Perhaps some snacks for the road (Jerky, chips, sunflower seeds, gum, granola bars)

Location: Mpls, MN | Flies - Bring fabric softner sheets. Place some in the boat, half hanging out of the compartments. Smells nice but the flies will leave you alone. We did that on the LOTW last year and no more ankle biters. |

Location: Forest Lake, Mn. | For a trip to Canada, I carry 2 spare tires, jacks, woodblocks etc for changing trailer tires. Thought the odds of having 2 flats on a trip are remote, it could happen and 60 miles or more between some towns could really screw up a trip.
Parts from Winnipeg take a week!!! Marine dealers, if you can find one, don't stock much in the way of parts for motors, boats or trailers, unlike Mn. dealers. Doesn't matter where in Ontario you are, if you walk into a dealer and need motor parts they have to order them and it takes a week to get them. So if your motor develops problems, your trip is screwed unless you have more than 1 boat in the party. So I carry spare spark plugs, extra primer blub, gas filter, complete water pump impeller kit, Thrust Washer, lubes, oil, electrical wires of different sizes for trolling motor and all other electronics, electrical connectors, cable ties, spare bulbs, spare prop for main and trolling motor, timing/ camshaft belt for my 4 stroke motor, tail lights, side marker lights and complete trailer wire harness.
Murpheys Law: If anything can go wrong, it will. At the least conveniate time in order to cause the greastest damage. Granted, one can't carry everything, but this is a list of parts for the most common problems and the easiest fixed problems. The Ontario boat dealers do have good mechanics to work on boats, motors, etc they just don't have the parts in stock. But if you bring parts with you, you can always find someone to install them at least in the areas that I've been. And all of that just might save your dream fishing trip to Canada by keeping you on the water and fishing. I've had problems of one sort or another on every trip I've taken to Canada.
I even have a spare motor if the 90 horse breaks down. I have a 15 horse kicker that can at least get me back to the resort or off the law in case of a storm.
Basiclly, when traveling to Canada you had best bring it with you because there's no garuntee that you'll be able to find what you need up there, or find it in a timely manner in order to save your fishing trip. That goes for everything, Food, clothes, kithcen stuff, liquor, GAS, toiletries, medicines, whatever.
Western Ontario is that under developed and it can be many many miles to the next small town and who know if you can find what you need when you get there.

| Ok, seriously, pay attention to the folks above. I would start my advice with preparing for those things that can go wrong on the road. I once ran over a big dead deer at 65mph in fog at 2:30am in the middle of nowhere. It tumbled under the truck and then the trailer. It tweaked my trailer axel like a hot-wheels car, blew out the grease and then of course the bearings on both trailer tires. What a mess. Limped into the nearest town, took a couple hours at 25mph or so, slept in a parking lot, two days to have the trailer fixxed, slept in my truck, then half a day for new tires, etc....
#*#*, I guess you can't be ready for someting like that. But for my 1,400 mile round trip, at the start, I was ready with: brand new tires on the trailer; I had two spares; I relpaced and repacked the brearings myself; I had a jack set-up just for the trailer (don't rely on the one for your truck, it might not work, especially if the lug nut deals don't fit), I had replacemenmt lights for the trailer with me including the tools to make the change.

| Second spare semi in case the first or second one has a fuel pump go out.
Extra trailer for the boat goes on semi #2.
Footsy pajamas go in the spare luggage on semi #2, along with the portable cappucino machine, and the "spare" spare fuses. |

Location: WESTERN WI | Don't forget the extension cord for the battery charger or to run to your internal charging system. You can't go wrong with an extra camera (disposable) in case one falls in the drink and of course camera batteries. Did I see some sort of elixer that contains alchohol? If not, an emergency pit stop would suffice. Speaking of which almost Miller Time!!!

It's because I HAD a Merc at one time that I carry all this stuff. I had more trouble with that Merc than anything I've ever owned. I now run a 2005 Yamaha 4 stroke only problem has been a plugged up water intake. I had a 2000 Yamaha 4 stroke only problem was the water pump impeller went bad and a carb stuck open once. The Merc sized a cyclinder and I had it rebuilt and then the block cracked. Never had major powerhead troubles with my Yamaha's
Besides the parts that I carry are actually small in size. I keep most of them in 1 small tackle box. Stores easily in a compartment in the boat. I have more muskie baits in my boat than parts.
Last year on Lake of the Woods I had the socket for my bowmount trolling motor shortout while fishing. I pulled another plug out of my spare parts and fixed while on the lake. Took about 20 minutes and I was fishing again. I even had a digital voltmeter in the boat to troubleshoot the wiring to find the problem.
Don't know how many flat tires I or friends on the trip have had over the years. Not a trip breaker, but it sure can delay you and maybe spoil a day that would have better been spent on the water.
I'm not a mechanic. If there's a major problem with the motor I wouldn't have a clue how to fix it. But if I carry the common parts for the most likely small things to go wrong I can always find someone to install them. I looked at my motor the other day, I couldn't find the spark plugs there hidden under a cowling of some sort, but I carry spare spark plugs. If I'm in the boonies somewhere then I'll have them if need be, and then I'll worry about figuring out how to install them. But at least I won't have to wait a week for them to come in from Winnipeg.
Hey, if it's mechanical sooner or later it will break and will do so at the most inconvient time. Not an pessimist, just a realist. Been there, done that, have had the ruined trips to show for it. Now I carry spare parts. Which reminds me I need spare bulbs for the navigation lights. and a bearing kit for the trailer axle. Thanks guys!
