At looking at Topo maps of my lake it seems to have tons of flats and I was wondering how do you fish flats because I always here people talking about fishing flats as a structure. Could anyone help me out? Thanks

Hello,
A couple ideas that I like to do that might help to give you some ideas.
First I like to run cranks just off the flat, over the breakline in deeper water. Mostly start casting or trolling parrallel with the breakline and once in awhile onto or away from the flat. Usually working the lure at the depth level of the flat or a bit higher. I try to get the active fish holding or cruising open water adjacent to the flat.
Then I will look for isolated pieces of structure on the flat or baitfish and fish near those areas. If all else fails I like to simply drift over the flat and fan cast searching for active fish up on the flats or try to find new pieces of structure.
happy hunting

Springtime - try fancasting flats quickly with faster moving baits looking for active fish. Spinnerbaits, rattletraps, bucktails, small twitch baits and quick hopping gliders are good. If it is a large flat, try analyzing it for subleties - feeder creek, weed pods, rocks, wood, sand, sharp break, river channel, anything that stands out and concentrate on those areas.

Summertime - I usually only fish flats when it is windy. Active fish have a tendency to cruise the flats during windy conditions. I have the best luck with quick moving erratic baits when casting under these connditions. Make a drift along the deep edge and then make a drift across the middle. If you don't see any fish, move on. If you can troll, speed trolling spinnerbaits across flats during windy conditions can be dynamite.
