Hi there,

After going through 4 St Croix Avids, 3 Calcutta 400Bs and 2 calcutta TEs last year, I had pretty much given up on the high priced reels. In my quest for a cheap, disposable reel I came across the Shimano Corvalus 400. After 3 months of almost everyday use by me as well as clients, the reels are still working perfectly! I was a little sketchy since I had a bunch of Shimanos fail on me last year, but these Corvalus reels are really the best I have ever fished with..The best part about them is there only 80 bucks.

If your looking for a nice, inexpensive reel I wouldnt hesitate buying a Shimano Corvalus..

Take care

Ben

As long as they stand up to the abuse in my boat, I could care less what other people think about them.

What reels do you use?

I caught one musky with mine and it worked great. The next time I set the hook my drag slipped, and I could not use the reel anymore for the rest of my trip. The rep from shimano told me the corvalus was not made to be used with superlines and that I should switch to mono or dacron.

I was also told that by the reel guy at St Croix. He said the Avid 300s are only rated for 17 lb test. He pretty much told me that I would be better off buying the cheapies..Kinda sad if you ask me..

Thanks for your input..

You get what you pay for...period..All muskie reels will break or need service, nature of the game...but to say the corvalus will perform on the level of a TE, Calcutta b, Luna or other reels is a joke. Sorry Ben, but it won't fly..Be good and have a great season..Ben

I agree that the Corvalus is a good reel for the money. Flawless last season, and no repair needed... Still performing well this season. I will be buying more of them.

I like the Cardiff series. I use the Cardiff 301 with 50 # test on a variety of rods.

Ben do a search about this reel. I am totally relaxed, but did not want people to be totally misinformed with your post. You run a big post of updates on fish caught and the such with many mid-30 inch fish and an 40+ from time to time and people might think these reel will really hold up well..Just looking out for the consumers...Ben

Kevin, Look at what you are comparing A. Corvalus (a little stiff)(moderate price 70-80$)
B. Garcias (classic looks)(low to above average pricing)
C. Penn International ( A fair Inshore reel)
D. Calcutta (nice reel)(Bmodel 200$, TE 350$
5#of apples...5# of oranges...25# of grapes and frickin truckload of bananas. I am sure that if you looked hard enough you will find someone who has had bad luck with reel models that you own unless you have one of a kind reels made just for you. Reels are mass produced and therefore have problems among the masses. I currently own 2 Corvalus's, 2 Corsairs, 4 Calcuttas, and a Catala, as well as, several Stradic and Spirex Spinning reels. I have tried other reels and found them to be inferior for some reason. If one guy has good luck with his Corvalus's then kudos to him. I personnally favor the Calcuttas over the Corvalus, but who in their right mind wouldn't it goes back to the apples and bananas. I prefer Shimano(and am not sponsored by them in anyway)over St. Croix(Daiwa),Daiwa, and most certainly over The unmentioned reel not worth repairing.
