What I am talking about is doing certain excersises which can prolong as well as enhance your time on the water.
If you are like Dadson or myself and you like throwing big baits, here are some things that may help ease the fatigue you may experience.
I have a 70lb punching bag that I work out on which helps to strengthen my shoulders, wrists and most of my upper body. It also helps to increse overall cardio and fitness. If you've ever gotten forearm pump or cramped wrists from working big baits for hours at a time, this is a great way to condition those muscles.
Also, I ride my mountain bike a lot and do a lot of little hops and wheelies etc. This also helps with endurance and upper body strength as well as to help with reaction times.
Push ups are also great for working those upper body muscles which all come into play when casting and working big baits, not to mention giving a powerful hookset!
Musky fishing can be a very tiring ordeal at times especially when the fish aren't cooperating and you are fishing hard and fast in search of active fish. Doing some of the excersises above will help you to stay on the water longer and to give those big baits the extra body english they require to keep them dancing all day long.
Give them a try...you'll be glad you did! |

| I've found the best way to get in shape for musky fishing is...
musky fishing!
Its good to stay in shape during the off season, but you're gonna be hurting for the first 3 days out anyway.
I do notice a lot less fatigue at the end of a long day by about July though... |

| You do little hops and wheelies....hahahahahahahahaha
I don't know why that is funny to me. |

I'm just saying what has worked for me is keeping those casting muscles in shape as well as keeping my reaction times sharp.
Is it necessary? Not at all.
Can it help make your time on the water less strenuous? Absolutely. |

I can fish much longer and cover far more water than I ever have before since I started really excersising the muscles in my shoulders, forearms and wrists.
It's just a suggestion to help those who wear out and start to hurt after a few hours on the water. Of course you "just fish" while your out on the water...but putting in some quality time excersising is certainly going to improve your stamina and that can't be a bad thing can it?

Location: Northwest Chicago Burbs | Actually, though my girth expands with every year, I can attest that the simplest change in diet and exercise can really make a difference in the boat. A few less pounds to carry around, a little more flexibility can make you more "ninja like" in the boat, and less achy at the end of the day.
I am currently attempting to shed a few of the "post wedding bliss" pounds that I put on in the last 13 months.....wish me luck, would be nice to not feel swift as a dumptruck while putting in 14 hours a day on the boat on Eagle Lake! |

| fishing is supposed to be fun.
between working a full time job, operating a tackle company, taking care of my wife and the rest of my family, and many other responsibilities I barely have time to exercise just to get in shape. That's pretty obvious since I am not in shape.
I would rather spend time taking care of all the other stuff so I can have more time to go fishing and have fun, rather than spend time exercising so I can fish a little longer.

Location: Muskoka Ontario,Canada | Baldy, I agree with you that time is precious.
I also run a business and don't get to fish anywhere near as often as I'd like to. Excersise is one of the things that I personally use to enhance all aspects of my life besides my time on the water.
When I am finally out on the lake, the last thing I want is for my forearms to cramp up so I can't throw the baits I want and have to resort to smaller baits or trolling.
It's something that I make time for because excersing on a regular basis is one of the best things you'll ever do for yourself and your familly. A healthy heart and circulatory system will keep you around longer for your loved ones to appreciate you.
