Sore Hand

Here's a question.

Does anybody else have a problem with their hands by the end of the season? I suffer from what I call D.G.F.S. Death Grip Fatigue Syndrome. I palm my reel in my left hand and right now it's fine, but by the time October/November rolls around, I can hardly even lift a cup of coffe with it. I try not to squeeze too hard, but when I'm on big fish water I do it subconciously. Any ideas.

May your 2002 be filled with muskies. Pat

I do after a whole day of casting but never after a long period od fishing. My wrist on my right hand gets sore because of casting and fishing jerkbaits. Also from hardpulling baits like a tandem bucktailspinnerbait.

A little trolling usually solves the problem for the day but the next day is ... auwch!! But I never had any longterm effects on my wrists

muskyaddict,

I had the same problem. I used to cast left handed and palm the reel with my left hand. My left hand was always cupped around the reel. Major pain and soreness towards the end of the season.
Now, I cast right handed and then palm the reel with my left hand. By changing hands while casting, I'm able to move and stretch my hand. This has made a major improvement.

Sounds like a you suffer from a pretty good case of tendonitis. The best thing do for it is to rest it unfortunately. If you have a problem doing a simple activity such as lifting a cup of coffee after a few days of rest I would suggest seeing a physician. You would probably need some physical therapy to strengthen the surrounding muscle groups to take some of the load off your tendons. They make some commercial braces that work pretty good.

I've found that gripping a smaller rod/reel combo greatly reduces my hand fatiuge. Thinner diameter rod corks make a big difference. Garcia makes a "low seat profile" musky rod just for that purpose. Of the few quality rods I have, a St. Croix Premier is the largest and a Fenwick HMG is the smallest.

What type of reel do you use?

You may want to try a low profile reel, like an Abu Garcia Morrum or Tournament Pro. The difference between these two reels and a C3, C4 or a Calcutta after a long day of casting is amazing.

I have a 6600 Morrum, and a 5600 Morrum. I can cast either of them all day, the 5600 can handle everything that the larger 6600 can, and the 5600 is even easier on the hands....

My two cents - Good Luck,

Hey I'm kinda of like divini I do notice some major pain some days with my hands but not long periods of time. I'm not sure how you prevent this maybe put padding on the side of your reel so you don't get such a square feel?

I hold my reel at the reel-housing and not the grip of the rod (just the trigger). I don't know if any of you do this but it helps to fish relaxed. I do switch often between jerkbaits and crankbaits/bucktails if I feel an stinging pain in my wrist. Nowadays I get this less often and mainly during a holiday when I fish several days on end.

Maybe you should talk to a custom rod maker like thorne bros and see what they can do,,,Ive noticed less fatigue on my hands with bigger diameter cork grips. Ive also thought that if you had a shorter rear grip you could then fish the rod right in front of you with the butt up against your stomach or chest and relive less pressure on your hands with your body absorbing some of the stress and also a pivot point for the rod butt for jerkbaits. Ive always wanted to try this but never seem to get around to it

I don't palm the reel. Instead, I place the rod, in front of the reel, between my index finger and my middle finger of my left hand on retrieves. In this manner I have three fingers wrapped around the cork from below and a finger and thumb around from the top. To lose this grip I would have to break all my fingers off.
Holding the rod this way is much easier than it sounds!

teck, I'm 22. I use two finger to hold the trigger and the rerst of my right hand goes around the reel's housing. Work great for me but I use a calcutta 251 and an abu 5501 C3, maybe you guys use bigger reels?

I also have that problem after a whole day of fishing but not after a whole year. I grip the rod/reel really hard and my hand gets tired of holding it. One way I've learned to deal with it is to grip the rod/reel differently. I start off palming the reel and later in the day I grip the little section of cork(handle of rod) in front of the reel. Switch back and forth all day and it seems to relieve your hands at times.
