| I`ve been muskie fishing seriously for about 20+ years now but I`m almost ashamed to admit that I`ve never left the Badger State. I read posts about MN lakes getting more and more pressure and even guys talking about LOTW getting crowded. It`s mind-boggling to think that a lake of that size could ever be that crowded.
My question....I`m looking to get out and fish new water and want to take my wife and daughter along. Is it worth the extra effort and travel time to venture all the way to Canada? It has to be a risk/reward thing I immagine. I figure I`d have to take two weeks vacation to justify the extra travel and still get my fishing time maximized.
Most of you guys obviously travel north of the border. Is it necessary? I`d like to hear what drew you to make your first trip to Canada and what keeps you going back? I have friends that are leaving tomorrow to drive 16 hours then stay over night someplace to fly-in farther to fish a total of 4 full days. What makes that better than driving 6 hours and fishing 6 full days? Am I really missing the experience of a life time by fishing close to home?
I know there are alot of variables that enter into the equation....weather being the main one....what do you think?
Go north for a shorter period of time or stay closer to home and fish more hours?
Enlighten me...Beav | |

| Beav,
In my opinion, if taking the entire family along staying closer to home is a smarter move. There is more to do "other" than fish when staying in WI.... you know restaruants, shopping, or whatever. A few extra days will give you more opportunity to get out fishing (typically in smaller windows) while the family finds other entertainment.
I fish 4 days a year on LOTW and it is no place for the wife and kids. There is nothing to do BUT fish... which means on the water by 5:30 am and don't come off till 10:00 pm. If your family likes that kind of intense fishing or just relaxing at the cabin.... then Canada might be O.K. for you.
Also, the area of LOTW where I fish is almost MORE crouded with musky fisherman than many of my favorite honey holes in Wisconsin.... but it is bigger water and certainly has more BIG fish potential. If you look hard enough, there is still plenty of wilderness experiences to be had in Canada.
In summary, Canada is a FISHING trip and Northern Wisconsin is a FAMILY trip that includes some fishing. Good Luck with your decision making and make sure EVERYONE has fun!

| Beaver,
Nothing against WI but it's not the same. Bring the family to the Leech Lake area and you'll have things for everyone to do as well as a chance at a record fish. Check out www.leechlake.org | |

| I`m a lucky guy. My wife hates shopping for trinkets and all that other touristy stuff. The only reason that we travel to Minoqua is to go to Rollie and Helens. Then my wife says "Lets get out of here. I can`t stand the crowd." So being around "things to do" for her and my daughter are sitting by a campfire, fishing off the pier and an occasional dip in the lake. But I`ll check out Leech. I heard the Cass lake area is pretty good too. Thanks for your ideas and imput. Beaver | |
