Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | Stormy weather brought the 2006 PMTT truly to life today reviving what had been a 2006 trail comprised of tough days for the anglers. The last event at the Petenwell Flowage saw 13 fish caught, with the first event in early April at Cave Run, KY. bringing 19 in for registration. Today's total of 36 fish not only exceeded fish caught in the combined events at the Cave and the Pete, but set a PMTT one day record for most fish registered. The fish total had four teams doubling up, two teams with triples, and the leader with an amazing four fish day. Along with the numbers of fish, a 40.5, 46.75, and a 48 were aslo caught.
After a number of days of stable weather, the rapidly changing conditions sparked fish activity throughout the lake system. Troy Zulke of team number 52 boated their first of two legals on their second cast of the day, and boated their second fish six hours later. A window opened up for muskie action just after the early morning rain and lightning passed on, another around 10:30AM, and one as the day drew to a close. The second set of rain, lighting and thunder moved across the area late today.
In many cases, pre-fishing the event appeared to be key to Day One success, with a number of teams holding to patterns established earlier in the week and seeing pay off from their persistence. Tom Dietz and David Four of team 124 doubled up with a 37.25 and a 35.75 by sticking to a plan devised from success seen Thursday. Bill Ramsey executed on a similar strategy, which led to a 40" that came from the exact same kind of structure he had caught two fish on a few days prior. On the flipside though, a number of teams in the top 10, nameley Steve Rustenberg and Ron Bonman are sitting in fourth after not pre-fishing and the leaders of Dan and Mike Wojtusik did not see a fish in four days of pre-fishing.
Though conditions didn't make for tough catching, but it did make it tough for teams to crack the top 10. Wells and Schneider (a personal best for Schneider) boated a thick 48" fish, but are sitting at 7th due to tema doubling or better. Anything beyond 6th required a double, the top three saw 2 triples. The Wojtusiks are currently in first place with a pair of 38"ers, a 35.75, and a 38. In addition, the day one leader did boat a fish that did not measure.
Mike and Dan live locally in the Three Lakes area, and are well familiar with the water, and how new weather patterns could affect fish location and bait selection.
Going into Day Two the leaders have 207 points, second place a point total of 150, and with many teams moving nice fish while boating a large amount of sub-legals, the door is wide open for dramatic movement within the top 10. Weather forecast is calling for thunderstorms, northeast winds and low 70s for temperature, meaning that the fish could turn on again as they did in Day One ushering in a whole new list of names on the leaderboard.
