My boat has a similiar problem to the thread below. RPM gauge stuck, gas level stuck...and so on...

How do you get these gauges working again? I would assume this is a simple fix.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dave, same response as the other post, as long as the guages are working when the motor is running no worries,

ever notice on your car / truck when the engine is off the gas guage does not always drop to empty but ususally somewhere inbetween the actual reading and empty, same thing on boat motors

John, thank you for your response.

That is my problem. The gauges are not working when the motor is running. Do you know what might be causing this?

This is a newer Ranger, 2003.

Thanks for your time,

DAVE

Dave, If none of your guages are working I would think that there is a common problem that affect all the guages.
in your case I would just call your dealer, It may be something as simple as a blown fuse

I think it is probably a ground/common wire problem. The guges all have some sort of ground on one terminal that should go to the negative side of the battery/main terminal block. I'd check you connections from battery to the main panel, and then on the back side of the gauges.

One gauge failing, OK. Two failing, suspect something in common with both.

I think Shep has it mostly right.
If your guages read correctly when running, don't sweat it. When you shut down, and everything does not zero out, you have shut off the connection. Run out off gas, or disconnect the fuel from the engine while running, the guages would zero out. Don't sweat the small stuff, and just fish your fish.

I suspect Shep's theory may be the culprit. I have a 2004 Ranger and under my dash is a common ground terminal block with a variety of items grounded to it. Suspect yours is similar, check it for corrosion, broken or unplugged wire, etc.

If that doesn't work call Ranger customer service or your local dealer and they will gladly help you. A boat that age should still be covered under warranty. The likelyhood of having several guages go bad at the same time is slim, suspect electrical and the only common wires your guages share is the ground wire, the signal wires all come from different sending units. I.e. the tach runs off the motor wiring harness, the fuel guage reads off the sending unit in your tank, but all have ground wires.
