What is the best wood to use to make a jerk-bait. Something like a reef-hawg or suik type bait that I can weight to suspend right in their faces!!!

It really depends on what you want the lure to do. I have been making some giant suicks out of oak and maple because I like the hard wood; it holds up better than the pine the originals are made of. I also weight them to hang in the strike zone longer. Becasue the suicks are pull baits, the extra density of the hard woods doesn't harm the action. On the other hand, jerkbaits with which you want to "walk the dog" or get diffeernt roll or wobble action out of sometimes work better if they are made of more bouyant wood, but wieghted to the desired action, either in the balance point or along the length of the lure. The controversial HR baits are made of cedar, but wieghted more. Maple, on the other hand, takes a finish better than other woods, but its dense and less bouyant. You may just need to experiment. Good luck.

for gliders and sliders I have the best experience with beech wood (not birch, beech) and oak because they are already near neutral boyancy. For divers I use meranti and beech, depending on how deep I would like it to run. Shallow = meranti, deeper = beech wood.

For glider's Oak, Maple or Cedar works good.
Suick/Bobbie Bait type jerk bait's pine will work.
