Are you talking about an area between two bars?....or what you put on a horse?

What do you mean when you say bars? I'm new. Is it a depression or an uprising like a reef?

thanks

In a nutshell, a saddle can be any sort of depression between any two pieces of shallower structure. Many people connect the idea of saddles as shallow areas between two islands...but it can go much further than that. if you find a really large long reef, a slight depression somewhere on it could be considered a saddle as well, and may be the "spot on the spot" where fish can consistently be contacted.

Saddles can be very small, and in some cases they might be very large and wide....much of that is dependent on what type of structure is present around it. Also, the depth of a saddle is relative to the water around it. If the water is really deep around the structure, a saddle can be fairly deep as well, but would be considered shallow based on the depth of water surrounding it.

Best saddles usually have a combination of items within them: Weeds, rock, humps, current, etc. This, again is relative to what is around in the area. It might even be as subtle as a change in weed type which could identify a good spot within the saddle as well.

Lots of things to consder here, but the best teacher is to go out and fish through areas thoroughly and get "intimate" with the structure. Being out there and exploring the area thoroughly will teach you more than anyone can explain in words.

here's a simple way to remember:

make a fist, look at your knuckles

your knuckles are humps or islands
the series of knuckles (humps/islands) form a ridge or reef
your fingers are points
the gaps between your fingers are draws
the low spots between your knuckles are the saddles
(saddle: low spot between two high spots, and sloping down to either side)

Nice, and I thought the only neat thing I could do with my hand was make a quick map of Wisconsin!
