Location: Lino Lakes, MN | Just wondering if any of you guys have fished Kabetogama before? I have the opportunity to fish it for a week before I cross the border and hit LOTW the next week and I was wondering if there was a fishable population of muskies in the lake? I wouldnt mind walleye or smallie fishing for a week before LOTW, but would still like the chance at getting some family members onto a few skis since they wont be making the LOTW trip the next week. Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

In my experience and from what I have heard, Muskies On Kabetogama are very rare... a few make their way in, but not a real fishable population. Maybe that is changing though, it's been a few years since I have fished it.
There are some nice Pike though... My advice would be to target them.

I would recommend taking a day trip (walk in lake) to Big and Little shoepack. Take some light bass gear and have a blast casting for muskie. The forest service has a canoe located on the lake at the end of the walk in trail. You just need to reserve the canoe at the forest station and they give you a key to unlock the canoe. You will not catch much over 36 inches but they are abundant in both lakes and a blast to catch. It's about a 1 to 2 mile walk in so just bring a few lures and a rod.
Just park your boat at the trailhead off of Kab (get map from the forest service) and hike in. It’s a neat experience and you can catch 10-20 muskies in a day!

| I believe Shoepac lakes are in the Voyageurs National Park so you should check with the Park Service not the Forest Service. Catching a muskie in Kab would be like winning the lottery but large northerns abound. |
