Flaptail type bait modification

There has been a resurgence in Lure Builders designing models like the old Vamp Flaptail. I used to build one for myself I call a Dog Turd.

I missed alot of the initial strikes, and decided to modify the bait with a stinger. About 80% of the fish I catch on a Turd, I hook on the stinger, so it works!

Get a piece of .050 wire, bend it 90 degrees about 1 1/2" from the end. Make a 90 degree about halfway to the end of the wire.

Drill a hole about 1" from the center top rear of the bait, all the way through. Run the wire through from the top.

See where the end contacts the body, drill another hole deep enough to allow the wire to be tapped in all the way, seal with epoxy.

Twist the end, split ring on a small but strong treble, and play the easy when you are not sure where they are hooked!!

Steve,

That makes the stinger hook hang directly below the bait not behind. Correct?

Hey Steve, The way they come with the screw in the nose of the bait, and that short piece of wire attached? I don't like that. Do you pull the screw out and screw in a heavy duty eye screw so you can attach a proper leader?

Steve,

Have you tried to just put an eye screw on the belly side of the bait? I'm guessing that would make it too ass heavy.

The stinger has to be absolutely rock solid, that is why I drill through the body of the lure. I use a screw eye in the nose of the bait, low on the nose.

I have never had the screw eye even loosen up any, so it works. Snoddy did the lead wire to balance the bait to the line, and the rod.[8)]

Now I fully comprehend the term "Dog Turd"! [8)] My God what did you paint that thing with, a tree branch?
