| Hey Guys,
If you were going to be the producer of the most awesome video ever made, and wanted to teach the masses beginners & experts alike, what would your video look like? What topics would you cover? What are the guys out in the muskie fishing world looking to learn?
Feedback would be great!

Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | First, IMHO, it needs to be all about the fish.
Second, every spot fished..why there, then? What's the deal with the structure and why select the presentation for that time of day and laocation?
Third, mechanics. Show us how.
Fourth, do what you do and catch fish. Big fish, of course, it's Eagle Lake.
Entertain us and educate us while putting big fish in the Frabill, that's what I'd buy. |

Location: Presque Isle Wisconsin | Steve's answer is right on.The video has to include where, what when and how in detail and cover the subtelties of each of those categories.I would use different people who are knowledgeableon particular aspects of the video, but not focus on them but on the technique they are good at;ie weeds, river locations, deep rocks, open water, live bait.etc etc etc.
I would like the video to lengthy, even a box set ,also entertaining.MOst importantl I would want it to be a reference that I could go back to often and review before a trip.
In summary keep the personality lights dimmed but brighten up the educational details and somehow keep the whole thing entertaining. The entire box set would include seperate videos pertaining to area specifics,ie Wisconsin,Canada Minnesota,Southern muskies ect as no one video could detail geographic specific muskie behavior.
Thats a lot to ask for but thats what I would buy and havnt seen produced yet.

| Howie,
Exactly what I was looking for...I want to do ALL of those things. I will be most of the personality, but will have some very knowledgable guys sharing the boat as well...so, I will try to meet all of your requests.
Since 9 out of 9 weeks I spend in Canada, trying to make area specific segments will be a little tougher, but will try to be as diverse as possible. I will definitely be doing segments on trolling on kincaid, st. clair, lac seul, a few others with my partner Mike Barratta.
In addition, I will be doing some casting segments all over. So, hopefully it will be diverse.
Two tape, box set, great idea. I will have look into this. Great amount of info to fill up that much copy, BUT, I want it to be the best EVER!!!

| Sworrall and I have spent a couple of hours in the boat together, and I'm going out on a limb here, but the conversation has turned to the likeness of trophy bucks and trophy fish on more than one occasion. Their habits, their preferred habitats, the fact that they are generally loners.
We concur that you have to learn about the habitat that you are hunting them in. Then you have to figure out how they utilize it and where their preferred travel and feeding routes and areas are. It comes down to an in-depth biology lesson. Learn more about your quarry and it's habits, and you will understand it better and find a way to explot it's vulnerabilities.
So what would I look for? A lesson in biology and real estate. Let's face it, whether it's big muskies or big bucks, it location location location.
Aren't you more successful as an angler when you "learn" a lake? You identify the spots where you move fish and where you move big fish. I'd like to learn what to look for at what time of the year. Teach me where to look, when and why, and leave me the rest of the learning to me.
If somebody tries to teach you "everything", we'll all fish the same.

| Great suggestions about what to put in a great video. I have a suggestion for something to leave out. Product promotions. Of course I would include a mention of the successful equipment used. I suggest you leave it to a quick honorable mention as the hooks are removed or something. I can't speak for all, but I get turned off by repeated mentions of all the different products used by video/magazine producers/authors. Sometimes they seem more concerned with product promotion then with the technique they are trying to teach. I can't wait to see some of those beasts you stick on Eagle in a video. |

I agree that the focus is on the fish and learning more about them, whether beginner or expert, not on the egos of muskie fisherman. Include a section on women in the sport, and on successful kids' events.
Early in the video, a map showing the muskie range in North America and how the sport is growing everywhere.
On the "mechanics" or "how-to" section, I'd include some info on tackle and how good tackle benefits the fish for C&R and the angler for bait presentation. Also a section on boat control, showing and visualizing spots and how to fish them. Some sonar and mapping (paper and electronic) tips. Maybe even some trolling tips... lol.
General educational comments interspersed on how long it takes on average to grow a muskie to "x" size, muskie diet studies, release tools, handling techniques.
It would be cool to have a section on bait makers: brief look at some of the big tackle manufacturers and then interviews with some independents or basement makers.
It would briefly address the WR controversies but put it in the context of the quest for a fish of a lifetime. That's what adds to the muskie mystique.

I'm new to this sport and am spending the summer trying to get up to speed a little bit before a trip to Eagle. What I find lacking in most videos is a good description of mechanics as someone previously mentioned. As a rookie, what I find severely lacking, is video of the release and handling of fish, especially big fish. We'll be with Herbie or his guys for a good part of our trip, which calms my nerves a bit. To be honest, however, considering the Musky experience of the four people in my party, I find the thought of landing one of those Eagle monsters, and then handling and releasing it with care, fairly intimidating. When I instigated my plan, I bought a number of videos and DVD's, but found viewing the catching of fish over and over got old quickly. Of the six or seven I have, not one has explained in any detail the unhooking, holding and photo taking, and release of a big fish. Obviously, your project won't be completed by the end of August, but that's the kind of DVD I'd love to get my hands on. If it included what I'm suggesting, it should be required viewing for anyone fishing trophy waters that has never caught a fish over 40".
Forget the two box set, how about the Donnie Hunt Eagle Lake Musky Library? Buy the whole set and get a free Bulldawg.
The thought that I could harm a true trophy is one I try not to dwell on as my plan progresses. Luckily, I've been fortunate enough to watch Mike and Joel handle a few fish, and they've explained as they went.
Just the opinion of a 45 year old kid that wants to do it right.
Kevin
The fishing without professionals part of the plan begins soon. God help us all. |

| WOW.....my video will be 6 hours long, but I am OK with that, as long as it covers what you, the muskie public, would like. I am truly looking forward to this venture, although I want to insure it is RIGHT ! ! !
Thanks for the input!!!

Location: The Sportsman, home, or out on the water | Go with what everyone has suggested, but put a human spin on it to. I want to know the folks on the video. I want to feel like I wish I could spend a day with them on the water for not only thier ability to catch fish, but because they are real people. Some folks on videos might as well be robots, because they exibit no personality on the screen, while others should not be themselves quite so much, because if they were in my boat, I'd throw them overboard for being so rude to others in the boat, or being a pompas butthole. Oh yeah, try to use basement guy's baits, as opposed to using the big guys' stuff. And don't suck up to your sponsors by mentioning thier products every ten seconds.
Just my buck and a quarter.

lugh if you want to, I'm doing a DVD just like it. |

Yep...I want to do exactly as you mentioned, & maybe with economies of scale I can.
I would love to do 2 segments....and probably will. I want to teach a lot about the keys to BIG FISH !

| you know what i would like to see.
-someone stress something that Pete Maina preaches...."the head breathes"
-releasing fish successfully as a one man deal AND also footage of doing the CPR process as a team
-a good shot of a fish dancing around a properly executed figure 8 then eating would be awesome!
tons of the other stuff that everyone else mentioned....so many good ideas.
oh, and maybe as a bonus, some nice footage of those monster pike from Europe!

| Donnie,
Focus on keys to big muskies for those experienced anglers who need to pick it up a notch (Serious with tons of why and how to and great big musky action shots). Also cover and categorize big fish waters and big heavy tactics
I agree with a second getting started video with extra basic fundamentals, how to and why but allot of fun mixed in and great action shots). Also cover and categorize action waters and numbers tactics
We can talk about this up at Eagle or when you speak to our club in November

| No Shady Moons anywhere on the video!
You've got a lot of great ideas. The thing I would do is hire the Lindners to shoot it. They are by far the best. Their on the water video is simply amazing.
Pick your location, lure choice, and presentation apart. Just like you would a juicy looking piece of structure. I don't always want to know how, but why?

I'm not suggesting having Al and Ron be in it, but the the production crew to shoot and hep you edit it. They do the FLW Walleye Tour events, and the video is spectacular. I can probably get you a contact if you would like. Let me know.
I am serious about no Shady Moons! |

You don't necessarily have to provide specific lake names.
There already is gobs of information available about bait selection and technique mechanics.
Consider Mr. Pearson's recent success providing where-to & when-to information about The Shield ! |

Location: The Yahara Chain | Discuss the seasonal movements of the musky. Explain the structure that you are fishing and why you are fishing it!!!!
I wouldn't discuss anything about the world records or the various record keeping organizations...that would be a big turn off.
Don't pimp anybodies products, keep it about the fish and what makes them tick. |
|

|
| Troy,
Thanks for the input...I ask that there would be additional feedback.
If I don't mention some of my good sponsors, and companies that have enabled me to make a video, it would end up costing me an amount I would be unable to make the greatest video ever made. It will be far from commercial city....I promise, BUT, what would you do?
Donnie |
|
| |
|

Location: The Yahara Chain | I see your point Donnie...I would suggest to keep it tasteful....maybe just mention your sponsors at the beginning or end of the video. Thanking them for making it possible, ect. Sort of like Dick Pearson did in his video. Don't turn it into a commercial like a lot of people do. "Thank God I got a Fig Rig" ect. Don't pimp your sponsers while you are fishing keep the conversation about Why? When? and Where?

Donnie, dying his hair blonde and wearing a thong is something most would be unwilling to pay to see, regardless of how good the musky info is... |

| Troy,
I can promise promotion would be tasteful....I am with you & orobably 90% of the people, I HATE over hearing about how great a bait is, how great at catching fish a rod is, etc.
Dutch,
I tried to hire some pretty, thong type individuals, but they kept getting backlashed, & my wife wasn't too excited about us practicing in the living room.
Mark,
EXACTLY...no one would want to see me in a thong!

| Would this be specific to Eagle? I'd be less interested in watching a vid filmed solely on one body of water (one major thing I love about the Badfish videos). It would be awesome to do some filming on a big river (Larry, Ottawa, Miss.) a clear body of water (portions of Eagle, Dryberry, Cedar, etc), and a stained fishery (LOTW, Lac Seul), maybe even Wabigoon if you want to discuss dirty water tactics.
Just my .02 cents. Either way, I'd probably still buy it!!!!!!!! |
|

|
| Hey Esox50,
As I mentioned earlier in the thread, & didn't do a very good job of emphasizing it, but I will be on....
1.) Eagle - 4 weeks
2.) Lac Seul - 1 week
3.) Indian Chain - 3 days
4.) Kincaid - 1 week
5.) St. Clair - multiple wkend
6.) Stewart - 4 or 5 days
7.) Nippissing - 4 or 5 days
8.) Wabigoon (Steve W.?)
Hopefully this will be diverse enough and covering plenty of different situations.
