Location: Forest Lake, Mn. | I thought I would start a thread for peeps to post the conditions on Mille Lacs. So how was the opener? The fish moving at all? Not asking for gps coordinates, just general info on the fishing at the Big Pond. Let's keep this going all summer. Thanks |

| Anyone hear anything about the big pond lately? Thinking of heading up Saturday and wondering if they are going up north yet or if it I'd still be better off heading to the south bays. Any info would be appreciated as I have not been up there yet this year. |

| Was out with clients yesterday and saw 10 fish and had a serious case of HEARTBREAK.Young client hooks his first muskie, oh, 50" and 35lbs.,just about to slip the net under her when she makes one more run and comes unpinned.Without a lot of pressure, the fish opened one of the split rings and was gone.He hooked a 42-43 later in the day that also came unpinned at boatside when she did the corkscrew.Nate had a tough day but kept chucking.Surface temps were in the 69-70 degree range. In the store for 2 days then back to the Pond. | Fished friday night and all day Saturday in Isle, Wahkon, Vineland and Roland. We ended up moving 6 fish and of course boating plenty of pike. The fish are in the weeds but the window of activity seems to be extremely small. At one point on Saturday we had seen 1 fish in 8 hours then moved 3 in five minutes. Not many boats at all in Vineland should have been a clue to us that the muskie fishing was brutal! |

| Fish are starting to move! Found a rock reef that was loaded with muskie. Had 4 or 5 hot follows and two blow ups on prop baits after sundown. Could see fish as plain as day on sitting on the rocks, it was unreal watching them only feet from the boat! |

Location: Forest Lake, Mn. | Fish have stopped moving! Or, are slooow at best. Fished N. End. a few follows for my partners, I think they said 10. Ok, that might sound like things are moving but the fish were only doing their part for the tourist trade. In other words they were low and slow. A couple of big fish were seen but...well, it was the old see me.. ...but you can't catch me. I didn't get a follow. Nothing moved on anything I threw, but at least I saw a fish so it's a baby step in the right direction.
Lake was calm, with just a little ripple at times. Fish seemed to be on the break. Seems like that little weather front that came through late Friday night, early Saturday morning shut things down. We fished Leech on Sat and moved nothing on Leech so came down to Mille Lacs on Sudday hoping to improve our odds, I guess we did if getting a few lazy follows count for anything.
Saw a few familir faces up there. Felt like a reunion of some sort. |

Location: Forest Lake, Mn. | Any new reports this week?
I was up last Tuesday for a day. Moved a few fish but no strikes. Pretty slow again. Fished Vineland mostly then ran up to N. end and looked at all the fish in the aquarium. The fish on the N. End were so negative that you could drop a jig on their backs and they wouldn't move. But that was 5 days ago. I'm slow in posting reports. Anyhow, saw a number of fish just sunning themselves but as I said nothing doing. |

Location: Forest Lake, Mn. | Just spent 2 days on the Pond. Saw a number of fish but didn't boat any muskies. Partner had a low 40 inch fish on and lost it. Had a couple of hits that we both missed. Partner had a approx 12 pound pike and say a 8 pound pike in the boat. Saw a couple of pigs of which one followed the other didn't.
I got a small pike and the biggest walleye I've ever caught. I know this is a muskie board, and who gives a rip about walleye? Well I caught it on a Huntertail bucktail. It was 26 3/4 long. Inside the slot limit so back it went. I'm not good on guessing walleye weights but call it an 8 pound fish. Pretty fair fighter, wish I could have got it on walleye gear rather than muskie gear, I'm sure that would have been FUN, but even on the muskie gear it gave a pretty good fight. It's also the only walleye that I've caught on muskie gear. We also had a couple of decent walleyes follow to the boat. I kept teasing my partner, that we should stop throwing those walleye lures and get some leeches and nightcrawlers and go muskie fishing. Made sense to me, if we were getting walleye on bucktails, spinnerbaits, etc then we needed leeches for Muskies. LOL!
Still, it was a SLOW fishing period. The muskies were slighty active but not going great guns. But there were a couple of chances to score. We had a lot of the low, late and slow follows. Only had 1 follow from a fish that showed any real aggression on the lure. But that one also didn't hit the lure.
Monday was windy and the lake rough, but seemed the better of the 2 days fish activity wise. Tuesday in early morning there was a little activity but with the High Pressure weather system it was kind of slow. |

| Out this past weekend for the first time on Mille Lac this season. Lost 2 fish sat. and 2 sunday, all action was in the mornings. Seen a lot of muskies biggest 45+ inches but most from 36-42. Lot of missed strikes and stuff and after the fourth one lost it was propably good I had to head home becouse I began to get a little p'd off. Tryed the night thing sat but the wind chased me off the water early. Two weeks till I can make it back so I'm countin the days. |

Location: Maple Grove, MN | For weeds, popular Mille Lacs lures include spinner baits, plastics, and topwaters. Running lures like spinner baits and plastics over and through the weeds or prop style topwaters can be affective at times.
All the standard cranks like Jakes, Depthraiders, Grandmas, Slammers, etc can be good for trolling along weed edges and rock bars. All the popular jerk-baits seem to move fish at times too.
I don't know if there is a best color or not. Talk to five guys and get five different opinions.
Hope this helps some. |

| Agreed. Most things will work depending on conditions, I really like glider style jerks and topwaters but have done well on spinnerbaits and bucktails also, white, orange, black, red, pretty much varies with personal preference and the mood of the fish. I also think plastics are good here (as they are on most muskie lakes). Sorry for not narrowing it down real far but I think most stuff will work, so I'd say whatever you have lots of confidence in. Good Fishing. |

| fished Mille Lacs on thursday and Friday. There was a substantial Tulibee die-off. Talked with a local and he made an analogy to sitting in a fast food food place and picking off oily, salty french fries as they come floating by. Who knows, but muskies were slow for us on the south side. It is sad to see the number of dead walleyes floating on the surface.

| Hey, I read something on a proposed 48" limit on mille lacs and several other minnesota lakes that is going to be put to a vote, and I also heard there is already some opposition to it. Does anyone have any information on what, when, why and is there any organization on our side to see this thing through. I just thought I'd bring it up becouse I feel we really need to stand up and let people know we care about the quality of our musky fishery. Thanks. |

Release em all. |

Location: Elk River, MN | I have no idea why anyone would be opposed to an increased size limit. This years Muskie Inc magazine said 98.5% of all muskies caught last year were released. Look at all of the 50"+ (lots and lots) that are being caught and released. Catch and release has paid off HUGE dividends.

I fished it with Jonesi last Sunday for only 6 hours on my way back to Chicago. We had action from a couple fish, one over 50, and caught three pike in the 40 inch range. Bucks and balldawgs is all we threw. More specifically the XX and mag dawg in any color. Weeds showed us the most action. Give him a call 612-799-2034 on your way up there. Bring a ton of rain gear and a big boat. The waves get rockin out there.
