BullDawg Modifications

I remember reading an article in Musky Hunter about modifying a dawg to up the hooking percentage of it. Can anyone tell me more about this? What have you found to work out with this lure. I have not touched any of mine, and lost a couple fish on them. Considering any sort of action to make them more effective hookers. Can't seem to remember what the article said about how to go about rigging these up to work better. Let me know what the secrets are to making this better. I like the bait, and it will catch fish. Most people pull the hooks out of the plastic on the 9" dawgs...its simple and then you just use a lighter to put the plastic back together where the hook was pulled out.

I remember the article as well, I forget who it was that did the modification - maybe Leech Lake guide Jeff Woodruff???

He basically had removed the single hook from the dorsal fin (I doubt this hook does any good anyway) and had modified the Treble Hooks so that they were coming out of the top of the Bull Dawg.

Unfortunately I do not remember how he did this, I know he used some leader material to modify the hooks.

It sounds like this modification improves the hooking percentage and also makes the lure more weedless.....

Maybe ask the folks at Musky Hunter, they should remember more of the specifics...

The article was written by Jim "Murph" Murphy. He is one of the best on Leech from what I've heard.

I was doing a similar mod to mine before I read his article and it has helped my hook-up percentages. Basically mine look similar to a quick strike with the wire burried in a slot a cut in the body with razor blade and melt it back together. It looks ugly but it works...

Last e-mail address I have for him is [email protected]. This address is from last winter when I was talking to him about his boat so I'm not sure if it's still current.
Nice person I'm sure he'll help you out with your mods.
