| First of all, thank you all for your well wishes and your patience as the opener gets closer.
All Perkettes, Crappies, Chromes, and Megaturds are ready. So if you ordered something and want it for the opener, get the checks in the mail. I spent most of the morning boxing up lures for guys that have paid already. So if you sent me payment, your lures are going out Monday morning, unless you got to me before my unscheduled work stoppage, then you should have them by now.
Here is the unveiling of the new Megaturd. No more brass hangers or other gizmos to use to get that flaptail working. Polish ingenuity and a simple bead chain with a split ring on either end gets the blade turning fast and exiting the water more often on the retrieve. And with it back a little further from the body, each time it does kick out, it pulls the tail of the lure to the side with it giving the lure a rocking motion that flashes the scales on the side. Blunt nose pushes through the water causing a wake because the lure has been belly weighted to plow through the water, not ride high on top of it. Keep your rod tip low, and reel just fast enough to get the blade to kick out. If it spins, you are reeling too fast. This is one great figure 8ing muskiefirster I tell ya. Pull it through the straight aways and go high in the corners and you'll get a gurgle out of it that will drive followers nuts. I've been pulling it all the way out of the water sometimes so it looks like something jumping and then landing in the water again. 4/0 hook in the front and 3/0 hook in the back and 7" of wooden body make it one big turd. Remember, you saw the bead chain connection here first, at muskiefirst. I have a feeling that I'll be making more of these. If you thought flaptails were boring to use and never really drew much of a response, I think that you just might change your mind when you see this thing pushing a wall of water your way.
Of course it doesn't mean anything until the king of the turds gives it his nod of approval. So I'll have to wait and see what Slamrs Dad has to say. I can't call him dad anymore. Now we're brothers. So I guess that I'm Andy's Uncle Beaver.

| The first batch of 20 went in a day.
I'm going to have to order some more blanks and see if I can get some more out for prime top water time.
I meant to put this in the basement bait builders forum.
Slammeramadingdong, could you please move it there.
There will be more at a later date.

Got out with Koepp the other day and got to see some of your handywork. Just wanted to say that they look amazing. I really like the blue/purple blends that you have. Let me know when you are going to have some extra baits done and I will pick a few up. Keep up the good work bud.

| Thanks. You should have just yelled "FISH!", and then threw them in your box.
Check the buy/sell board. Everything that he had is for sale on there.

| Here's the latest from yesterday. A guy ordered a Bluegill. I cringed. How the hell do you copy something that looks like that?
I took out books, pictures.....if I could have caught one, I'd have taken it along.
Well here's what I came up with, and it doesn't have any E-Tex on it, so it's only going to look better.
That's the best that I could come up with. I can't compete with God's artwork.

| That's one of the best bluegill patters I've seen. I work on painting lures as a twelve year old. I don't have an airbrush though so that makes it harder on me. |

| as a bluegill paint scheme lover (my shallow raider bluegill is my fav bait) I gotta say that bluegill you got there ROCKS!! |

Location: Tomahawk, WI | Beav, that bluegill and your chrome crappie colors rock. i have about 10-15 old style Undertaker blanks already weighted and primed and i am wondering if you would paint them for me?, how much each, and lead time. You may e-mail me at [email protected] if interested and we can get into more specifics. Thanks |

I'll share one of my secrets with you ...
When you look at a photo of the fish you are about to copy "unfocus" your eyes and sort of look through it. Then notice what it is that stands out the most and enhance it in your painting. You seem to have captured exactly what I'm talking about with the bluegill pattern.
A quick example is if you "unfocus" on a Gizzard Shad photo, the black dot behind the gills is what really stands out as well as the large eye. I use that technique a lot when deciding what it is about a pattern that actually makes it identifiable at a glance.
Hope that makes any sense to you! lol |

| Hey Muskie-Kid 12,
Send me an email and i will send you an airbrush that has hardly been used for free. It just collects dust at my house.

| Nice work JJ. |

| That's not JJ's work, that's Beaver's.
JJ is just giving away an airbrush.
Nice going JJ, very generous move.
CHOMP! |

| Snax, I've been unfocused since the 70's!
Yup, I get your drift. There usually is one or two identifying traits that each fish has that other fish can home in on.
Sometimes it's just flash, other times it's spots or bars.
I always have believed that something that contrasts grabs a fishes attention.
I always try to add someting easy to see in my lures. It's hard to eat invisible fish.
Thanks,

I think that the ULTIMATE pattern would probably have to be the reverse of the natural camoflage that baitfish have.
Like a reverse Perch with light bars, dark belly and light back. That would have to make it more visible yet still make it look like a Perch somehow!
Hmmmmm...might have to give that a try! |

| Yeah, like the Black Perch pattern.
Black lure with gold scale bars on the side instead of the other way around.
I've done OK painting a Cisco with a black belly instead of a white one, or a dark blue.
They should be able to see it easier from underneath, but on the snap and glide, they still get the flash of the belly roll.
I thought that the fish swimming belly up were for the eagles and gulls.
I still think that you have to have some contrast for the fish to see the lure and draw it's attention and hold it.
Like giant eyes too. When I start doing more Perkas, they have a much bigger profile, I am going to try to highlight around every eye and see what kind of results I get.....depending on the pattern.
I even broke out the old color wheel to see what color is the best contrast for the color that I'm using.
I have a link to a computer generated color wheel that is freaking awesome. I'll see if I can post it here.
Here are some old, original Undertakers that I did for a guy today. Kind of hard to use big eyes on such a small lure.

| The brownish/yellow bait on the bottom left is making me drool; those colors are particulary effective on the local lakes where I fish for musky. |

| I meant "particularly" effective.
...can't type with these fat fingers. |

| Me either. I hold a pencil in each hand, eraser side down, and type that way!!!!
Don't drool on the keyboard.

Those are some great paint jobs. I can see I need to get some baits over to you this Fall and order up some new custom paint jobs.
Great work pal. |
