Guys:
I remember a similar post last year, however, I'm wondering if there are any new models or improvements people feel good enough about to endorse - the guy behind the counter at Gander tried his best to talk me out of even considering one - what is the best LOW PROFILE out there for $150ish how big of a lure can it handle without an unrealistic amount of stress to the gears, bearing etc... Thanks.

I LOVE the Torno 3003 (5.3:1 gear ratio) that I got off eBay for $27 (brand new through FFO-tackle.com's eBay store).....it's held up pretty well, though I mostly throw small bucktails, spinnerbaits, and topwaters with it. Great buy for the price, and its been flawless so far, though I havent used it THAT extensively.

I use some low-profile reels for musky fishing early in the year. I have had some real problems with a few manufactures in the $70 - $100 range. Right now I believe that the Shimano Citica is your best bet as it is a touch bigger reel and uses quality brass gears and components. I believe the reel retails for around $120.

Citica and the curado are good low profile reels at 5.3 and 6.3 respectively. The garcia torno 3003 and 3004 reels are the same retrieve respectively and can be had really cheap on fisherman's factory outlet. I have a 3003 on a bucktail rod and my kids have 3004 reels. I casted all 80 yards of superline with a casting plug on my 3004 and have never done that with any other reel.

I have a Qauntum Energy that has held for the last 5 years without a single flaw. It is great for all of the small baits,ie. little bucktails, husky jerks, small spinner baits, etc. You might want to take a look at the Quantum Cabo PT's as they are a low profile reel with saltwater construction with good line capacity, similar to a 6500. I use a Calais. It's a bit pricey but well worth it. Super smooth drag. I have landed 15-16 40"-49" on it with no sign of wear. With 7'10" Loomis muskie medium this thing casts ridiculous distances. My hands are arthritic and I can cast this all day with little discomfort.

I have a curado I use from time to time on smaller twitch and pull baits. I has worked fairly well.

It irks me when people give opinions to customers not based on facts or trying things for themselves.

I've used and liked all three of these.....

Curado
Torno
Cabo

With today's super lines and the technology going into reels you don't need a huge levelwind anymore.

Quantum Cabo's are SOLID..I have 2...they are a bit faster at 5.7 to 1 so they are not for all applications..small bucktails, twitch baits, gliders, and inline topwaters is what I use them for ...

I have two Curado's that I've used for several years and have had absolutley no trouble. I would recommend the 6.3:1 gear ratio - I have a 5.1 and 6.3 and greatly prefer the 6.3 - even for crankbaits - the combination of the lower ratio and smaller spool size just can't pick up line fast enough with the 5.1. (They also make a Curado in an even lower gear ratio - 3.5? - so be careful about what you're getting) About the only downside to the Curado is the spool size - it really works much better with lighter lines to keep the spool as full as possible on a long cast. 30# Stealth works great but jump up to 65# and you will notice the diference in line pick-up - if fast pick-up and heavier lines are desired then you really need a bigger reel.) I also don't find it a great reel for fast-moving bucktails - you've gotta crank it pretty fast, but for almost anything else they work very well.

I bought both of mine on Ebay for much lass than you could buy one in a store. There's always lots of used one very cheap too.
