Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | The opener was picture perfect in the morning. Mild temps and very little wind. Most of the action came in the very early morning and then again from noon to 2pm.
Water temps were in the high to mid 50's on the West end of the lake and high 50's to low 60's on the East end. Most of the muskies caught were shorties. I know of a 37-incher caught on a sucker, a 36 caught on a X-rap, a 36-incher caught on a small Suick, a 35-incher on a Drop Belly Slammer.
I caught a 39.75-incher on a sucker and jdsplasher caught a 40.5 just before dark.
Most of the muskies were lookers, not any reports of figure 8 fish at all. All of the fish that we raised in my boat were slow and low. They always seemed to check out the suckers and scare them before sinking back into the weeds.
Sunday morning was very slow for everyone I talked to. I hit the lake with my son and Ryan at 11am to fish the warmest part of the day. I was a very good call because we boated a 38-incher in the first 1/2 hour out. About 4pm we got into a frenzy of muskies.
A sucker rod started to sound off and soon a 36-incher was in the net. My son grabbed a rod and set the hooks into a 40-incher as I was working on the fish in the net. I quickly removed the quick-strike rig and placed the fish in the livewell so I could net my sons fish. As I grabbed the net the last sucker rod started to pull line. I engaged the reel and thumbed the spool and lifted the rod like a cane pole. My sons fish was ready and comming in on top of the water as the 35-incher came to the top. I slid the net under both fish to seal the deal of 3 fish in just minutes.
Here are some of the pictures I got from the opener.

Water temps are in the low 60's and getting higher as the week continues.
It's finally time to spank some muskies.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | The fishing on Pewaukee lake has been average to good in the past weeks. Fish up to 47-inches have been caught and released. Most of the action is from the low to mid thirtys fish and weed related. Some good fish in the upper 40's have been raised by my clients but not boated yet. Lots of big fish have showed up on the weed edges and are getting ready to move out to suspend. Look for the action to get hot as the heat sets in this weekend.
We are now into the second week of June and the water temps are back into the low 70's after dropping 8 degrees. This past week has been great for action and boated fish. Most of the fish my cliens have caught are in the 37 to 41-inch range.
Top water, bucktails, jerkbaits, and cranks have all boated fish recently. Oh, ya one on rubber also.
With this comming 90 degree weekend the lake will be full of recrational boaters. Look for your best action early and late in the day. The night bite has still not got going yet but will be starting to be more consistant soon. A client did catch a nice 41-incher just before 10pm last Monday(6-12).
The trolling bite will also get going as the water temps rise. I have got a few trolling but most of my booked clients at this time want to cast. The trolling bite will come soon enough. I like to cast while I can before they suspend. With all the big fish still following baits this past week from weed beds and weed lines I expect this weekend and next week to be very good for numbers and quality. Look for the bigger fish to be active at prime times. Fish in the upper 40's and even a couple 50's have been active this past week. With a little luck I will have some big girls being held by clients very soon.
I will post a couple client pics from last week.

Location: Waukesha, WI, USA | I was on Pewaukee yesterday for a late afternoon early evening guide trip. One follow, two misses but did manage to land a beautiful chunky 44" fish off a deep weedline. I watched the graph the entire trip while my clients casted. It's real apparent that the bluegills and bait fish are staging at the weedlines. I figure 7-10 days for those eager to troll. I did talk to one gentleman at the launch who trolled with his son. They never saw a muskie but did catch a walleye.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Ya, we got a 37-incher tonight on a Headbanger top water bait.
Last night we had 3 hits on three different top water baits without a hook up but I did get to catch a low thirtys muskie on a bucktail at boat side.
I had a real nice 45 to 47-inch muskie eat that same bucktail tonight on the first turn of my figure 8. She was real thick across the shoulders and would have been a great client fish if the hand-off would have worked out. As it was the fish shook the hooks and only left a memory.
I can still see her inhail the bait at boat side, I set the hooks hard twice and she started to strip drag, perfect time to hand off the rod to my client. Oh well, there is always tomarrow.
We also lost a fish as we were setting up for a trolling pass just after we got out tonight. I had a couple rods set when one went off. My client Billi got the rod and she held on while the fish was battling to get free. Somehow it came off before it got to the net.
One for 3 tonight. 3 for 3 would have been better. Thats fishing. |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Very wierd day today. Only one fish boated today, that I know of, on Pewaukee Lake.
9 boats trolling and one 32-inch fish.
The trolling pattern was so good going into today that I thought with the increased wind and pre-moon phase it was going to be a free for all. All of the people I talked to that were casting didn't even see a fish today.
The last 3 days have been 2 or 3 fish days out of my boat and today all we got was a walleye and snagged a perch from the school he was hanging with. Two wallyes Thursday night also.
I guess I have to go back out and try tonight. That way I will know where to start with my July 9th Sunday morning clients.
Wind, weather and full moon phase = Big Muskies.
See ya......

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Well Sunday moring was ok for the first few hours with two small muskies caught by my clients. We fished from 7am till noon. The biggest was 32-inches and the other was short of the 30 mark. Both fish were caught on small crank baits trolled through schools of suspended bluegills, perch and crappies. Depth Raiders, Ernies, Bagleys and Rapalas have all produces this past week. Green, yellows, reds and browns were the colors I was doing well on. Darker at night and brighter during the days. I hope this help.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | The water temps are getting into the danger zone on Pewaukee Lake. I have seen three muskie floating in the past two weeks. One was from a guy who caught a 39-incher out of 22 foot of water on a sucker. He didn't have the proper net or tools to deal with the fish once it was in the net. The fish rolled in his small net and was brought into the boat so he could get the hooks out. 15 minutes later it was put back into the water. A half hour later I noticed he still have the fish so I asked if I could help. The fish was already turning yellow and almosy dead. I told him to keep it because it is going to die. He told me it would be ok and I knew I couldn't do anymore. That same fish was floating that next morning.
Thursday I got a call that a 50-incher was caught and released in the morning and some pictures were on Lake-Link, I hoped that the release was quick and sucessfull.
I got a call Friday afternoon that confirmed the 50 floating. She was caught out of 40ft of water on a Depth Raider in 78 to 80 degree water temps. I know there is plenty of fish deep and they can be caught. Please try to target the shallower fish if you have to target the muskies. The mornings have been cooler but the stress of the hot water and fight is so hard on them.
I am not going to guide for a couple weeks for muskies on Pewaukee because these fish will die if you take them out of the water. The best option is to water release these fish so they have a good chance to live and grow.
Tonight was my last guide job and we used smaller cranks and fished the flats. We got a 14 3/4-inch walleye, a 29-inch pike and a 27-inch walleye this evening. The water temps were 78 to 79 degrees.
The 50-incher was a bummer, I am sure the guy did his best and hopefully he was quick with the pictures. This just goes to show you that even if a fish is released it might still die. Delayed mortality it is called. this is the third fish I have seen floating in the last two weeks.
Don't target the deep fish or better yet take a week off and help keep the fishory healthy. The heat will leave and the water temps will drop in a week or so.
Here is the walleye from tonight.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | WOW, it's been a long time since I posted a report here.
Here is some off my web site report I just finished along with a few pictures.
Ok, now for some fish reports. The muskie action starting in early August has just been awesome for those who have got into the trolling mode. I made a few minor adjustments trolling since the July report but mostly the pattern has stayed the same. We are still working areas with the most bait fish. Bluegills, crappies and perch are stacked up in areas of deep water. I know where they stack up and how to get the baits where the muskies feed. Deep running crank baits are still your best bet because they will get to where the bait fish are and when trolled through the schools of bait they will get ate.
Monday the 1st of August I got out with a new friend Mike Phelps and his boss Tony for a 1/2 day outing after work. We worked crank baits in deep water off the wind blown side of Pewaukee Lake. It didn't take long before a rod started to sing out drag and Tony was into his first muskie of the trip. A scrappy 35-incher was caught and released 1/2 hour into the trip, a good start I told them as I set the lines back up. In the next hour we caught and released two more smaller muskies in the low thirties. At 9pm we got into a very good muskie that made our outing one they will not soon forget. This was a beautiful 48-inch 30lb muskie that might just get Mike a raise at work by his boss Tony. I will get a picture loaded to the left for you to see and also in the PHOTOS 23 page when I get time to do that. Congrats Tony on a great Pewaukee fish.
This is only one of the many multiple fish afternoons we have enjoyed lately. Here is another one that was just three days later. This was the 4th of August and a 1/2 day 5pm till 10pm outing. Aaron and his friend met me for some muskie action. His friend had never got a muskie before and was looking for his first. He didn't have long to wait because I had a rod start to strip line just 15 minutes into out outing. A mid thirty's muskie was soon in the net and then released. I reset the lines and another fish grabbed on of my crank baits and he was into his second 36-incher minutes after he just released his first. Believe it or not this happened again after we released the second fish. The third fish was a 37-incher and now Aaron's friend is into his third muskie and its only 5:45pm. Remember we started at 5pm. Well Aaron got to get into the action after that with a 36-incher of his own shortly after 6:30pm. Yes, that's 4 muskies in one and a half hours of muskie fishing but that was it for the outing. The next day I had Joe, Tia and Melissa out for some action. Tia got her first muskie and Melissa got a pike. Monday the 7th I got out with Kevin Dunn, we boated a 37 and 36-incher. We also had another fish that got off but that's fishing. Well you can now see the action Pewaukee Lake is putting out in August.
Multiple muskie nights is only part of the action, the walleyes that have been hitting our crank baits are quality also. Most of the nights we boat at least one legal walleye while we troll for muskies. Walleyes in the 17 to 19-inch range are common this past two weeks. Most of these are feeding in the same areas the muskies are. Find the food and the toothy critters looking for an easy meal. How cool is it to troll for muskies, release the muskies and catch a walleye or two to bring home for a meal. I know works for me because I got to eat a few of them lately. Today I got out with my son Mike and we had two legal walleyes in the first 1/2 hour of fishing, they came as a double, one on his side and one on my side. We also got a small mouth bass and lost a good muskie before calling it a morning. This recent East wind cool down has brought the water temps into the 77 degree range. This is a welcome cool down since the water temps were into the low 80's for a while. Look for the fish to start the pre fall migration back to the weeds in a few weeks. For now, enjoy the great action trolling while it's hot. I have some open dates left in August if your looking to get into the action.
I wish I could tell you about all the guide trips I have had this past few weeks but I would run out of time and room. If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me or contact me by phone. I would be glad to help you in any way I can. Look for the action to stay hot for the next few weeks or longer if the weather will stabilize. Muskie, northern, walleyes and bass all are active and fun to catch.
This past week cool down has slowed the fishing some but things should get back to normal and the cooler 77 degree water temps will be easer on the fish.
Here is some pics...........

Location: Home of the 2016 World Series Champion Cubs | Fished Pewaukee on Wed Aug 16. Got on the water at about noon. Started trolliing the west end north shore then around the south shore at and just west of the narrows. Marked solid bait fish along the northern routes but got nothing. Varried bait depthes from 5-15 feet while trolling mainly between 15-30. Never ventured much shallower than that. Casted a short while on the west end as weel. Zippo. Pulled out and ran into Mike Koepp at the ramp as he was waiting for an evening client to show from chicago. shared a little info and thanked him for the planer board tips. Headed over to Oconomowoc and fished from 6till about 11. No trolling just casting there. Fished the sharp breaks and deep weeedlines and also got nothing with the exception of a 20" smallie after dark on an eagle tail. The good news for the day was that the water temps seem to be slowly coming down. 77-78 On pwkee and down to 76 on Oconomowoc. Only one guy we talked to said he caught one. A shortie trolling deep. didnt say more than that.

Location: WESTERN WI | I am looking for a game plan for Pewaukee, late afternoon/early evening:
I am taking my wife's grandfather Musky fishing tommorrow night who has not caught a Musky in 30 years. He is 83 and had a surgery a couple of months ago and has been looking forward to this outing since I met my wife (5 years ago). So I am not looking for anyone to give away the farm, but just a few pointers to where I may have abetter chance to get him tied on to one. I have never been on the lake myself, but have heard goods things about this body of water. I hope I can manage to have a "Mike Hulbert Experience" taking a fragile senior citizien on a musky mission and be succesful. Thanks for any much needed info in advance, for I am grateful for this board.
Before I forget, I was planning on casting? Or should I troll?

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Both casting or trolling will produce BUT the trolling bite can be hot. My clients Mike Phelps and his father in law caught and released 6 muskies Sunday morning while trolling with me. I was proud to say they each had the chance to score 3 muskies each.
Mike Hulbert experiance?
There is less than 1 muskie per acre in Pewaukee Lake, not 7 per acre like Webster and those lakes. You might have to work for them. Find the bait and the muskie will be close by.
Anyway, I sent you an e-mail "Got Esox" with detail of what we did Sunday and where. I hope you score for him. I will be out so make sure I see you and I will steer you to some fish. Stop by Smokey's Muskie Shop around 5pm and I will mark a map for you. |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Ready or not the Fall action is just around the corner. Most of the South East muskie action is still being enjoyed by the trollers. The casting bite is starting to heat up slowly with each shorter day and longer cool night.
The best action is still the suspended fish that are eating well while hanging around all the bait. I have enjoyed multiple muskie nights and mornings this whole past month. Okauchee and Pewaukee Lake have been kicking our some big fish and numbers. Nineteen 1/2 days this past month has put 40 muskies in my boat. Almost all of these fish have came on crankbaits trolled through schools of bait fish or working structure.
The best action has come from matching the size lure with the size bait your trolling through. Okauchee Lake seems to require larger baits and Pewaukee Lake I like to down size because of all the stunted pan fish.
The trolling bite will start to slow as the water cools and the muskies start to work back to the weeds. I am looking forward to sticking some bigger fish as they start to show up shallower.
The trolling patterns will change from the suspendo's, to the breaks, to the flats, and then the weedlines. I have enjoyed two great months of trolling but the fall casting bite is comming soon. For the next few weeks the trolling bite will rock, then it's time to have some fun casting for a month or so. Then the meat come out..........
For more info on Pewaukee Lake check out my web site for a more detailed report. www.mikekoepp.com
Here is a few small pictures from the last few weeks on 5pm till 10pm weekday outing. Most of the fish were caught trolling but the last few were caught casting. More to come as the casting bite continues to get better. Last night my clients caught two, lost one and raised a few other good fish. I will post some pics when I get some free time. Got to go..............

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | The casting bite is now starting to get better this past week. With warm temps here again this weekend(9/16) the casting bite might slow. Look for the falling temps this comming week to bring in some deep water fish.
Water temps are in the high 60's this weekend and they will be falling fast into the low 60's by next weekend. This will bring on the bite as the fish will get the Fall chill. It seems like every year after the first Fall chill the muskie action gets better. Half of this is the increased numbers of fish that move back into the weeds and the other half is the activity of the fish. The Fall bite is going to get very good so you better be ready.
Hunting season is also here and the pleasure boaters are pulling their boats out. Sailing season is almost over and those jet skie's, wave runners, and tubers are almost done. This is the best time to get out on the water and enjoy the Fall action.
Trolling is still working for those who like to troll. After spending most of the 5pm to 10pm nights casting, I had an open night and decided to troll to see if my patterns are still working. Three low thirty inch muskies later in two hours I was happy to know that pattern is still good.
Casting or trolling?
This is the time of year they both will work. Pick your pattern and enjoy the rush.
I will post a few of the casting fish that have been caught by my clients this past week starting with September 10th. I will try to add a few every week for those who like muskie porn.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | The 52 was not caught on a Top Raider. It was one of Jims Headbangers. John Regal's client caught and released this fish Monday morning (the 18th).
Lots of patterns working on Pewaukee and other area lakes now. Bucktails and spinnerbaits have been very good. Top water has been hit or miss depending on the weather.
Jerk baits, twitch baits, rubber baits, and gliders will come into play soon with the recent drop in water temps.
60 degrees today on the East end and 64 on the West end of Pewaukee Lake. Fall is here, the fish are everywhere now. I found them as shallow as 3 ft and still plenty of suspendo's in the deep water to be had.
Got to love this time of year. Multiple patterns are all working, you just got to get in on the one that is working the best when your out. This weekend I would fish the weeds, I think with this recent cool down the fish will become more active shallow. Taylors Bay area all the way to Smokeys West will work, also try the West end from the condo's all the way around to Walks Island. |

and smack it but it never got any hooks. had one fish go after a topraider but that was it for topwater.
all the action we had was boatside so make sure to figure 8. |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | We boated 4 fish with a 39 being the biggest. Headbanger scored the big one. Bucktails and cranks scored the others. Your rite about the figure 8's.
This is the only picture I took of the fish last night.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I was out with my Ranger 620VS Fishermen. Crandberry in color. I had my black rain coat and green Wet Skins on. My partner that day had green Cabellas rain gear.
We trolled for a couple cocktails and started to cast after we knew where most of the bait fish were hanging. the gills are comming back into the weeds in packs. The North side was the ticket Saturday.
Sunday my clients caught two and lost three others. I explained that a good hook set is needed but that took a while to sink in. After a couple of lost fish they got the hint, or maybe it was persistance on talking about a good hard hook set.
Spinnerbaits, bucktails and top water was all working Sunday. The biggest was only a 36-incher but that was big to these bass boys. They never casted a bait caster before or caught a muskie. After a full day in my rig they were ready to get more into muskie fishing. Another father son hooked on muskies, I love it !!!
Here is Chris and his first muskie caught on a bucktail on the second turn boat side. You got to love it.

| How has the bite been, after the cold weather? Want to get my first sucker fish this fall. I have almost no clue really on what to do with the sucker other than hang it over the side and keep it out of the weeds. What areas should I focus on and at what depths? Will be casting too. Hoping to get out on wed after school and going to try to get second legal in the boat. |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | The East end has turned over and the West end is working on it. The Eastern 1/2 was dead this past weekend with all of the fish I know of comming from the deeper West end. I had a two boat guide job last night and we both moved some very good fish on the deeper end. A 36 was the only fish that we put in the boat but some real hawgs are showing up.
Sorry I have not posted much lately or updated my web site but with all the guide jobs and bow hunting I have not had any free time to sit at the computer and tell storys.
The East end will be rocking by this comming weekend. Suicks, gliders, rubber baits and suckers will get fish for you. I hope this will help some, I got to get back to work now.........See ya on the water!!! |

Location: Athens, Ohio | Mike, congrats on getting another father-son team hooked on muskies.
Even though my son Jon has taken this year off from fishing, I'm still at it. With my latest catches in Minnesota, I checked the Lunge Log today for my totals.
From my first and second at Pewaukee with you, I now have 27 muskies under my belt (well, 29 if you count the under-sized). 8 of those were 40 or better.
Thanks again for getting me kick-started. Hope to do it again with you. m |

Location: Southeast Wisconsin | Not to answer for Mike, but the best advice I can give you is to drag as many suckers as you can and wait it out. Feeding windows this time of year can be very short and may only occur once throughout the day.
This past weekend I fished out there with a client. We started at 7am on Pew and didint see a fish so we switched to Oconomowoc. We didint see our first musky until 5pm! From 5-530 we had a 36" grab a sucker and four other fish looking at suckers. At one point we had 2 different fish looking at 2 different suckers!
Fish shallow on the windblown stuff and deep (on the bottom) on the wind blocked spots.
Cloudy, windy days with North and East winds have produced best lately. Yesterday was the exceptiuon to the rule.We had a mild day with clouds and se wind, but I ended up with 5 fish in the boat...all on suckers.
If you encounter a sunny, mild day, a slower presentation has been the ticket. When the clouds are out or fronts are looming a faster, more erratic approach has been putting fish in the boat while casting.
Bulldawgs and shallow invaders have been the hot lures in my boat. Been seeing fish on just about everything else, but there not eating. Picked a few up last week on smaller bagelys and tuffshads, but nothing over 30
Hope this helps

| Thanks Ben. I am doing things right but I am in a LONG TIME SLUMP!! I got a new boat this year and I think it has some kind of musky repellent on it. I should take out the old boat I am trying to sell. Maybe the fish will jump in??? I guess I just have to stay with it. Some of my friends think I need to take the new boat to see some kind of priest to get the demands out. LOL!! Thanks Evan |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Good advice Ben.
Vacation for two weeks for me. Hunt, fish, then hunt.
I have been in a tree bowhunting for a while and then to the PI outing. Back to some bow hunting this week. The rut is on and the bucks are going to be dumb for a while. Lots of bucks but not the ONE yet.
Yesterday I was out hunting in the morning, fishing in the mid afternoon and back out hunting for the late afternoon. Passed on a 7-pointer in the AM, got in the boat by noon, stuck a very nice fat 44-incher at 2pm (moon rise), then back out bow hunting. Very nice 10-pointer very close but no shot. BUMMER !!!
Any way, most of the fish are working the FLATS outside of the dieing weeds. Drop suckers down close to the bottom and work Bull Dawgs, Joes, Suzie Suckers, or any other bait you can get to move slow and down.
I got that 44-incher just off the bottom in 16 ft of water close to deep water on a sucker.
I like to pick a couple spots and slowly work them verticaly. SLOW down and give them a chance to eat. Most people move to fast and miss out on fish. The guys that took my picture were 400 yards away by the time I was all set up and fishing again.
Two and a half hours was short but the feeding windows are smaller yet. I wanted to fish that spot on moon rise and then go back out hunting. Good thing I live 1.5 miles from the launch. LOL

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Jeff, most of the action is from suckers and Bull Dawgs. Work the outside of the weeds all the way to the breaks in the West end. 15 to 20 ft has been good.
I wish I could get this bow hunting done so I can fish more. I have two huge bucks that have been just out of bow range a number of times. This morning I had a 140 to 150 class 10-pointer 40 yards from me for 1/2 hour ripping up a tree in some thick brush. All you can do is watch and try to keep your heart from beating out of your chest.
I would give this years biggest muskie back for a clean kill on that brute. Today looks like a great day to be on the water BUT how can I after that this morning. I know where he lives and know he is there now. Tonight the night!!! |

Location: Germantown, WI | Was out on Pewaukee today from 7am to Ipm. I had 1 follow about 30" on a Deadhead glider and caught a 28" on a Hellhound. No fish on suckers today although I did have a fish grab a sucker by the tail and then let go. I spent the morning working the 10-13' depth range.

Location: Germantown, WI | I spent the day on Pewaukee yesterday 11/9 fishing off the weedlines in 10-13'. I had 2 suckers out and was casting jerkbaits, gliders and Bulldawgs. Nothing. No hits or follows. I also trolled a bit duing my lunch break and saw lots of bait concentrated between 28-32'. I suspect that the fish may have moved out deeper to the edges of the main lake basin. I was surprise because it had been nice all week and I had moved 3 fish in that depth range last Saturday.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | The ice is started and the lake should be ready to give up some Walleyes and Pike very soon. Sorry for the lack of reports but with bow hunting and the gun deer season added to my already buisy schedule something had to give. The muskie sizes grew as the water cooled, numbers dropped but the quality got better. Too late for reports now, if you were out you already know.
The muskie fishing this year was outstanding again. As usual a few good 50 plus inchers were caught and released. One was found dead a day later from delayed mortality. My boat didn't get a 50-incher this season but they were seen casting. All in all a very good upper 30's bunch of fish ready to make the move in to the 40's. There is a major batch of low 30's growing and ready for action next year. I am looking forward to getting the chance to get back after those 50's that were released this year, last year and the year before that. Lots of upper 40's showed up this season and next year looks very good for numbers and quality.
I hope everyone who checked out this thread learned something or got the itch to try Pewaukee Lake. I will be glad to help anyone learn more about the baits, patterns, spots that Pewaukee Lake has to offer South Eastern Wisconsin. If you have never fished it your missing out on a great fishory. Okauchee and Oconomowoc Lake are also very close and great lakes. Drop some of the local guides a e-mail and get into the action. As for now, it's time for fresh walleye, cards, football, venison and some cold ones. The ice is almost here and I for one can't wait. The ice shantys will be out soon and the winter action will be in full swing in a few weeks.
Mike

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Not a muskie report but for those who are looking to get out on the ice and have some fun here is the Pewaukee lake scoop. The ice is now safe for those who are looking for that fresh fish meal. We got 5-inches to 7-inches of ice as of today(1-28-07) and way more coming this week. It's about time we got some good ice!!!
The muskies have been going nuts this past week. Lots of people complaining about all the muskies and not pike. I explained to everyone who is bitching about all the muskies that, everyone tends to keep all the pike. Muskies are released to enjoy time and time again. I will always stress to everyone who I meet the importance of getting to a tip-up as fast as possible to ensure the fish will not swallow the hooks. I believe that most of the harm done to muskies is done during the short winter months. Lots of muskies caught by northern fishermen who use large trebles and wire leaders. I personaly don't run large hooks or wire. Most of the fish will inhail the minnow before you can get to your tip-up. This is why I use no.12 or no.10 thin wire hooks. I believe these little burrs of hooks will pass or dislodge as the fish eat the next meal. I use Mustad hooks because they are so light wire and will cause the least problems to the released fish. Be it a sub legal northern, walleye or muskie, they all go back and have a good chance to survive.
Ok, whats been working is the WEEDS. Most of the larger fish have been taken in or on the edges of the weedlines and weed beds. The West end of Pewaukee is kicking out fish like there is no tomarrow. Most of the fish are in the 16 to 19-inch range and fat. They are very active just before dark up to 10pm or so. the morning bite is also hot from just before first light to an hour or so after light. The East end is kicking our fish all over the larger weed beds and shorelines. I have been fishing out of my brothers houses and friends houses up to now and doing exceptionally well.
Get in on this action while it's hot. Fresh walleye and venison is someting special to eat while waiting for that next fish. I love this time of year, it makes the off season of muskie fishing easer to handle. Check in on the latest action at Smokey's bait shop or the Muskie Shop if your going out. I would be glad to help out if your going out on you own and looking for some advice.
With the ice getting thicker and the increased action on the ice the fish will start the move to deeper water soon. Look for the flats and drop-offs to start to kicking out some fish in the next few weeks. The panfish and pike are just starting to get going on the East flats out from Taylors Bay. Head out from the launch by Smokey's Muskie Shop and go straight past the island. Fish can be anywhere from the island to Taylors and East. Please be carefull with the fish you release and PLEASE don't target muskies. I will not even set up tip-ups any earler than a hour before dark when I walleye fish just to keep the chance of getting a muskie down. Most of the muskies are caught throughout the day by northern anglers. We did catch a very nice ski at 8pm Wednesday night, she went 43-inches long and plump as can be. She was only out long enough to turn her around and put her back, no pictures, to cold and hard on the fish to keep out that time. Extreme cold will hurt the fins and eyes. Water releases are best.
Here is some walleye pics from this past week.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Karl, not yet. Most of the action is still related to weeds. When they start to move out to the flats and breaks we will do some slip bobbers and jigging spoons. I just moved a shack to another shallow spot Tuesday night to try that spot out. Lots of action still going on in the weeds. West end has been kickin out fish in 6 to 11ft of water consistantly. The more fishermen that fish it the deeper you should move on those days/nights. I few of my friends have got multiple legals every time out. This full moon weekend is going to be very good. Fish the outside weed edges, they will be starting to move out soon with all the action on the lake. From the Condo's all the way around to Walks Island should produce fish.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | How time flies when the fishing season starts. Here it is the third week of May, and I am just now getting time to type up this report on Pewaukee Lake. So much has happened since my first May report. The Pewaukee Classic was a great time, and I ended up getting a 3rd place trophy for my 39-inch muskie I caught while fishing with my friend Mike Phelps.
Mike and I started out fishing the wind blown North shore in the narrows because that shoreline was getting pounded by wind for a few days and the fish were stacked up. Mike and I worked jerk baits, twitch baits and glide baits to see what would trigger a strike. The Suick was the first lure to draw a strike but that 40-incher got lucky enough to not get hooked. Mike was now pumped to get more action and continued to work his Suick. I switched to a Suick I had that was hot a few days earlier. Within an hour, I had a very respectable 39-incher hooked. I looked for the closest boat in the tourny and got them to confirm the length. That was the only legal fish we caught that day, but it was a fun day on the water and for a great cause. Six fish were caught that day by 80 some people that signed up. A 40 took 1st, a 39 1/2 took 2nd, and my 39 took 3rd place. After a good meal, everyone got door prizes and the lucky winners of the raffles got to go home super happy.
Muskie fishing from that second weekend up to this past weekend was just OK. Most of the fish caught were smaller male fish with some larger female muskies showing up just to follow lures to the boat and turn off. The Wisconsin Muskie Tour(WMT) came to Pewaukee Lake the 19th of May, and 22 fish were caught and released by 150 muskie fishermen. 75 teams hit the water Saturday morning for 10 hours of fishing. 4 teams got 2 muskies and 14 other teams caught one muskie. I fished it with a friend from work, and we had plenty of chances to catch some quality muskies but we never got to register any fish for a number of reasons. My partner and I had fish going on glide baits and twitch baits. Slammers and Undertakers to be exact. The winners caught their fish on Bull Dawgs. Actually, over half of the fish were caught ripping Bull Dawgs over open water or over the top of the weeds. I talked to plenty of the fishermen after the tourny and multiple patterns were showing fish but ripping the Dawgs triggered the fish into striking. The largest fish was a 46.5 incher, and that fish hit a plastic lure too. All in all a very good tourny on Pewaukee Lake. The weather was perfect and the fish were getting ready to start eating again as the effects of the spawn wear off.
I had a guide outing the day after the WMT tourny, and we made the best out of the conditions we had. With all the pressure of the tourny and the severe cold front that set in that night, I told my clients that it was going to be very tough and we were going to have to work hard to find an active fish and then get it to eat a bait. I fished with Scott Allen and his dad Jack that morning because Joy Allen, Scott's mom gave him a gift certificate to go muskie fishing. We started out fishing around 7am and didn't see a fish by noon, what a slow post-cold front morning. After lunch we decided to work the warmest water we could find and stick to it for the remainder of the outing. After a few lure changes, Scott got a small muskie to eat a Suick. I gave Jack my favorite Slammer twitch bait to work and showed him the best way to work it. After the first run through that area I was encouraged by the warming water temps and the sun starting to peak through the clouds.
Jack was getting tired but kept with it. Then it all came together for us with a few broken words and grunts from Jack as he set the hooks into his first muskie on his first day of muskie fishing. Now this fish was no ordinary muskie from what I could see as I hurried up to the front of the boat to remove the trolling motor and get the net ready. I was happy to see a huge fish on the other end of my clients rod. This huge muskie was exactly what us muskie fishermen fish for each and every day we set out to catch our dream fish. Not only was Jack battling his first muskie on his first muskie trip, but it was a fish of a lifetime for most muskie fishermen. Scott asked if he could net his dad's fish, and I was happy to watch knowing that Scott is a veteran muskie angler. Jack battled the huge fish like a champ with Scott netting the fish as soon as it got close enough to put the net under her. Jack has now caught a 49-inch muskie on his first time out muskie fishing. After a few quality pictures, he released the fish to make someones elses outing a trip they will remember forever. I explained to Jack just how rare it is to catch a muskie over the four foot mark. A fifty is the standard rule of a true trophy but any muskie that gets into the mid to upper 40's is a trophy in my opinion.
Look for this coming Memorial Day weekend to be the start of the good fishing. Water temps are getting back up into the mid 60s, and the fish will start to get more active. With the fishing just getting better and lots of clients waiting to get out, I will try to keep a Pewaukee Lake report going for those who are wondering what is working and what the water temps are in the area. Look for the bucktail bite to get rocking and the top water bite to start soon. Most of the fish that have been caught in my boat are the smaller males and some upper 30's fish. Jack's 49-incher is the largest so far, and more magnum fish will visit my boat this season. If you're thinking about getting a date booked for this summer or fall I would strongly suggest dropping me a call or e-mail so we can get you hooked up. Lets get out fishing. I would be glad to put you on the hot bite, proven patterns or show you all the hot spots. It's time for you to experience Mike's Extreme Guide Service.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Great window of action this past week from 5pm till 8pm. Night bite still is not there for some reason. I got out Saturday night from 6pm till 8pm and moved 4 fish on top water, all in the mid thirty's range. 66 degrees to 68 degrees on Pewaukee. Fish are shallow to deep water, they seem to be in a funk with the fast warm up, then cool down, and now a good warm up again. Some big girls are looking but not very active. Lots of mid to upper 20's growing up to keep us going in the years to come. Good to see those little guys, even if they are a pain in the a$$ at times.
Panfish and Bass are stacking up in the shallows. Look for some great action if your into catching lots of fish. The weeds are loaded with fish and will be for a few weeks more until the fish move to deeper water. Look for some great muskie action to start up now. Everything is just getting going. Time to start catching some nice sized muskies. See ya out there!!! |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | After a few frendly e-mails and pm's--OK, OK, guys, here the latest news on Pewaukee Lake.
Water temperatures are in the mid 70's and going up with this recent week of heat. The muskie action has been good in the early morning and late afternoons. Multiple patterns have produced fish in the past two weeks. Bucktails have got most of the fish burned over the weeds. Top water baits like a Headbanger, Top Raiders, Creeper and Hawg Wobbler have all caught fish recently. Bucktails of all kinds have produced action. I also had a few reports of fish caught on crankbaits casted and trolled from past clients and friends. I got out for a couple hours late Saturday afternoon and caught a low thirtys and a 38-incher trolling cranks through the schools of gills that I found in open water.
Most of the action has been from smaller fish with some low 40's and one mid 40's fish CPR'ed last week. Now don't get me wrong, Pewaukee lake can shut a good stick down on some days and make a hero out of a first timer on others. The fishing is far from outstanding the past two weeks if your looking for good muskies. Now if your targeting sub legals the action is hot for 25 to 28 inchers in the larger weed beds on the eastern half of the lake. You will get your chances for a good fish if you put your time in and keep a positive attitude. Working the deeper weed edges will increase your chances for a quality fish.
The weeds are now almost back to normal and lots of fish in and around the weeds. This week I have noticed lots of panfish starting to move out and spread all over the deeper water. Most of these fish are hanging in the top 10ft of the water column. This is the time of year you can troll or cast for muskies. I had two clients out last night that started out casting and then wanted to take a break so I set up some lines and shortline trolled for about a half hour. I mentioned the walleyes that were stacking up in the area we were trolling and they were interested in them. I set up two rods to get down to that depth and quickly caught a 20-incher. They liked that and we kept trolling but it's hard to not cast when the ski's are still in the casting spots. Trolling will come soon enough.
This is the time of the season where the muskies and baitfish will start to move to deeper water. I will be targeting the areas where larger weedbeds reach into deeper water, main lake points, islands, and river channels. It will not be long for the trolling bite to get started. For now I will enjoy the casting bite as long as it still shows me some of the 40-inch class fish. Once the larger fish start to move out I will split my time between casting and trolling.
Crank baits, bucktails, jerk baits and even plastics will produce for a while yet. With the water temperatures going up so is the muskies metabolism. They are eating more and can be more active. Get out early if you can, that is been the best action in the past few weeks. Don't get frustrated if you don't move a fish, keep up a positive attitude and they will show up. The last 7 fish caught out of my boat were caught without even a follow. I can handle catching evey fish we come in contact with, follows are good but feeling a fish first is best.
Sorry for the lack of reports here and on my web site. Lots of things going on with a family, regular job and guide jobs after work. Life is going by way to fast. Thank god for fishing, wait, thats even work. LOL
Good luck to all, See Ya on the water!!! |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | The trolling bite is now starting to get going. Clients have had to sort through a bumper crop of sub-legals to get a few legals. A couple good ones have been caught lately including a very nice upper 40 casting.
Both casting and trolling have been productive. Trolling has out produced casting just because more water is covered with more baits. I will post a few recent client pictures and add a better report as soon as I get some free time.
Bucktails and crank baits have out produced any other baits lately. The fish are very active and ready to battle.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Ok, here is the recent report on Pewaukee Lake. Sorry for the lack of reports here but my website is always just one click away. I try to update it every couple weeks or more.
Water temps on Pewaukee Lake have been just around the danger zone. The last week of July had the water cooking in the 82 to 83 degree range. I was doing my best to reschedule the guide dates during this high water temps. Most eveyone didn't have a problem with it and got alternate dates for the ones I had to cancel.
It's the 7th of August and I am still waiting for the rcent rain to cool the lake down under the 80 degree mark. Thursday 8/9 calls for rain and cooler temps so this might be the break we are looking for. I have heard of multiple muskies floating dead in the past week or two. I personally know of a 38 and 39 that are floating around for everyone to see what excessive heat will do to released muskies. Delayed mortality is huge during this heat. Please respect the resource.
I hear some other guides are still fishing but all anyone can control is themselves. I am looking forward to getting back out soon, it's killing me.
The action before the heat was outstanding. Multiple fish nites with multi species being common. Muskies, northern pike, walleyes, and bass were all active. Trolling was the best for numbers with some action on the weedlines for the casting fishermen. The nite bite, early and late in the day was best for the people working the weedlines and points.
My clients have been sticking lots of fish every day up to this heat wave that set in at the end of July while I was up at Mille Lac's catching some huge fish casting after dark. Our annual week long trip to Mille Lac's was awsome. My first fish was a very solid 50.25-inch muskie that came 3 hours into our trip. My partner Randy scored the next fish and it went 49-inches to start the week. Great trip for all of us. You got to like that pond.
Anyway, back to Pewaukee. With the water temps in the 80 to 82 degree range the fish will still be very active. Please respect the resource and let the water cool some. Two to three degrees is a huge drop and the fish will still be there for everyone to catch. Recently the lake is not getting lots of pressure because the word is out on how many fish are dieing while being released. Water releases are the best at this time of high water temps. No net, just reach down and cut or unhook the fish at boatside. This is the best for the fish.
The patterns I work are suspended fish and structure fish at this time of the season. Look for the concentrations of bait and the preditors will be close by. Crank baits have worked the best trolled through the schools of gills, crappies and baby perch. Colors like firetiger, white, green, orange and even red have produced very well. Try to match the bait fish your fishing around. If it's crappies stacked up go with white and black, gills and perch I would go darker.
I will toss up some pictures from the early July trips on Pewaukee Lake and some from just before the water got to hot.

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Pewaukee is still in the "slow no wake" and the fishing is picking up. Trolling is still very good. The slow no wake will be in effect through this Labor Day weekend so the fishing should just get better. Very nice to enjoy fishing this lake when all the other boats are just putting around.
Trolling is still rocking as the fish are starting to move back in shallow as the water temps fall in to the mid 70's. Look for the casting bite to get going very soon. I know of multiple fish taken this past weekend casting. Crankbaits, topwater and bucktails were the hot baits. I have still been putting the smack down on the muskies trolling with my clients. See my website for more details, pictures and client storys. |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | Well for those who are waiting for the casting bite to get going down here in South Eastern Wisconsin it's time to get back in action. Th recent cool down that set in last weekend, the shorter days and cool night has jump started the casting bite around here. Mid to upper 60's can be found on most area lakes now. The warm southeast winds the last few days have warmed up the water some and also the action. Multiple fish afternoons have been comon. Trolling is still very good as the suspendo's are showing up on the breaks and flats. The weed lines are now alive with action from the new fish that are roaming the weeds. The best part of this time of year is the fish you get to follow will be very active and go around the 8 a bunch of times. The first 20ft of your cast and the last 20 have been where the fish hit. Top water, bucktails and cranks have produced.
Look for the action to heat up as the water cools down and more fish move up into the weeds. This is the time of year you have to choose what to do. Cast or troll. Both are working and some times one is better than the other. Last night my client had 4 hits in the first hour of trolling. He boated two, lost one at the boat and missed on. We trolled for another hour and then switched to casting as the sun was going down. A hour of casting with no action had me wondering if we should have kept trolling. Moon set was only a half hour away so I headed to the two spots that produced the night before for yesterdays client. Ben was pumped to score and his determination was solid. The water exploded at boat side as a three footer crushed his Lungen DC9(proto type)(available soon). After a great fight I slipped the net under Bens third muskie. A quick picture and we were back to casting the moon set. Minutes later I had a mid thirtys fish eat my Lungen Reefer Night Biteas I started to crank it. I offered the fish to Ben and he refused. He wanted to see how I fought the fish and set up the net job.
Long story short, they are starting to get active and are now in the shallows. I will add a few pics for the last week or so. For a more detailed report see my website "mikekoepp.com".
