Location: Eau Claire, WI | As many of you have read either here or at other venues, WI is currently undergoing a test program with the Leech Lake strain of fish in several bodies of water throughout the state. One of those bodies is Lake Wissota near Chippewa Falls. The First Wisconsin Chapter of Muskies Inc. is helping to fund this project by providing revenue to assist the DNR with the purchase of P.I.T. (pit) tags.
PIT tags are small electronic devices planted inside the muskies upon stocking, it is an electronic chip about the size of a grain of rice. Then in the future when the fish are recaptured through netting or through angler catch, a reading device scans the information for the research project. I.e. length, girth, overall condition of fish, location re-captured, etc.
The issue is that PIT tags cost approximately $3 each. The goal is to PIT tag as many of the WI strain and LL strain fish as possible each of the next 4 years of the study. If we receive the number of fish indicated in the study, the cost of the program for PIT tags along could reach $32,000 Dollars. This is a very tough challenge for our club, as our typical operating budget has been less than $10,000 annually, this covers our youth events, and rasing fingerling muskie in rearing ponds, and other events. We are up to the challenge and ask your support in an effort to better the future of Wisconsin's Muskie fishery.
To help raise funds for this program the First Wisconsin Chapter started a few months ago,
The ADOPT A MUSKIE program. This program allows you to adopt an idividual muskie. As information about each muskie comes in, we will pass it along so you can track the development of your adopted muskie.
For a $10 tax deductable donation, you will recieve an official adoption certificate, indicating the PIT number of your fish and its length at date of release. Additionally you will recieve an official First WI Chapter, I Adopted A Future Trophy Muskie decal for your truck, boat, or tackle box.
All procedes raised will strictly be used for this program.
To adopt a muskie you may choose one of the following.
1. Make donation by Paypal via [email protected] You can contact Jon Olstadt regarding paypal questions at [email protected] or 715-834-1308
2. You may mail your adoption donation to

| I've got a $20.00 check heading your way. So if I understand this correctly, every time these fish would be caught by the DNR, and these tags checked, I'd get an update? That would be cool, but it's a good idea regardless. I hope you get enough interest to purchase all the tags. If there is not a time factor, the F-M Chapter could pass the hat at our next meeting, in late May. Let me know, and good luck. |

You have it right. Each time a muskie is caught and identified by scanning the the pit tag you will get an update on the status of the muskie you adopted. If this project between the 1st WI chapter and the DNR is actually going to go on as we hope it will and provide the valuable infomation it has the potential to we need support from people like you through the Adopt a Muskie program we have going on. We have a long way to go. We need about $8,000 for this year and we are far from that right now.
Thanks for your support.

PIT tags are not "electronic", but rather a series of wire windings in a glass capsule and when a scanner is waved over the tag, a unquie ID code is read. There are no batteries in the capules. Many times they are used for IDing prize horses or even your family dog that a Vet has implant in them.
If you would like more info, I can send anyone more info about the tags. Email me at [email protected] requesting such info.

| This is a great cause. Even if you dont fish muskie in North West Wisconsin this study will help DNR and local clubs in improving the muskie fishery statewide. I just wrote out a check for the effort today.(One tagged adopted muskie, less than the cost of one muskie bait!)
If you were looking for a way to make a contribution to muskie fishing this is the one!

| There seems to be some questions about how paypal works.
Here’s how to use paypal. 1. go to http://www.paypal.com. 2. If you don’t have an account, follow their instructions to set up your own personal account. It’s free and easy to do. 3. Once you’ve set up an account, log in, click on the “send money” tab and send it to [email protected] include your name and address in the form so we can mail out your adoption materials.
More in depth information is available on paypal's site but that's it in a nutshell.
Thanks,
Jono

| The Fargo-Moorhead Muskies Inc. Chapter voted tonight to pay for 100 tags per year, for the next four years. We wish you good luck on this project, and would like to see some other MI Chapters get involved too. Great idea.

Location: Eau Claire, WI | The First WI chapter would like to thank the Titletown Chapter for their support. They have committed to $500 per year for the next four years to be used on PIT tags. That helps us a lot. Thanks!

| Mark,
I will try to get a check in mail. Getting ready to graduate from college, to many things to do. But, muskie fishing is right in the front of my mind.
