This may be a crazy question, but I am going to ask it anyway. I have always heard stories of Muskies eating baby ducks and geese.

Being in Iowa I can buy baby ducks and chickens cheap. Can you use them for bait?

I am not sure, but that would sure raise Cain with the peta folks. I caught a muskie once that had a bunch of little ducks in it. Not suprisingly, it hit a topwater on Boom Lake. The Mallards were cheering when I stuck it.

Anybody ever try any artificial duck baits? The other day I found 3 baby ducks rigged together at one bait on ebay. Can't find it now. I found this on ebay though. http://cgi.ebay.com/wooden-glass-eye-musky-size-duck-lure_W0QQitemZ...

I would pay to see the RIGGING of a live duckling! And that thing once it hit the water would be flappin' all over the place!

You guys are bad, man.

I would have a hard time rigging up a duckling. Guess it ain't any different than a sucker, but still...

I guess I would use a small sucker rig? Maybe hold it on with a rubber band? I can get them for about 75cents ea. as ducklings.

Did you keep the musky with the baby ducks in it? How else would you know that it had baby ducks in it?

I could never bring myself to do it. But if I could, I would imagine it would require some sort of rubber band rig that wouldn't penetrate the ducklings body. It would be very hard to keep the little guys alive long enough to use them. They go into shock very easily and the first poke of a hook, whether anatomically fatal or not, would probably cause their death in a very short period of time.

Go on ebay and look under Cree Duck Lure, it was a lure made to look like a small duck that come in two sizes. Sold in Field in Stream back in the 50'sand made here in Oregon Ohio. Comes in a Musky size bait but hard to come by.

A very old Indian guy once told me about the best Muskie bait he had ever used. It involved somehow strapping a live gopher to a little plank. It was said that back in the day, it couldn't be beat. Anyone else ever hear of this?

Yes i have heard of this gopher on a board, but when it was told to me they used squirells with hooks strapped to them, floated them out on a board, then jerked the board out from beneath with a rope and let the squirrell do the rest. I'm sure it worked great, but I'm pretty sure it is very illegal today. I would imagine the baby duck is too, it if it happens to be leagal i think it would be a dynamite addition to ones arsenal...

It reminds me a little of InFisherman's "Greatest Muskie Video Ever Made".

A lady is screaming on her dock, and the InFishermen guys go to see what the problem is. She says a HUGE Muskie just ate her dog.

I think it was Larry Dahlberg who says, "Ate your dog, huh.........what color was he?

Classic.

By the way, I doubt the squirrels or Gophers were very willing participants. I bet it did work though.

Where would you keep the baby ducks? In the livewell? Be funny if a warden stopped you and asked what was in your livewell and opens them up and sees a dozen baby ducks. By the way, ducks aren't mammals. Mammals give live birth and produce milk.

My late Uncle Albert said the only problem with live red squirrels was that you needed really heavy leather gloves to rig them in the harness or they'd bite the crap out of you!

Have fun!

Someone sent me an e-mail of a person that caught a northern pike and while filleting it out found an entire duck in its belly. The picture is quite unique, not sure if everyone would enjoy it or not, so I won't post it. The pike seems to be only 35-37 inches too.

I used live Feeder Mice a few years ago. They didn't swim very long. It seems they went into shock and just floated.

Gotone- I would like to see a picture of the Pike.

Yes, I sure did. The thing looked totally deformed. And, I'd bet I caught that fish before you were born, D, and WAY before CPR was even a acronym. If I remember, there were 6 in there.

My dad made a baby duck lure, many, many years ago. It was made from a tennis ball, and had some yellow feathers on it, and a treble hook on it's belly. I vaquely remember seeing it. I'm pretty sure he caught a fish on it. I remember him laughing about it, with my uncle. BTW, they fished Butte des Mortes back in the day.

I am absolutely certain it's illegal here. Could cause one heck of a quack up.

I remember once on a trip to the Big V, we were fishing a saddle between two small islands. I saw a mother duck and about 8 small ones. They were swimming from one island to the other. We were there for 5 days. Each day we went back, one or two of the ducklings were missing. This is a hot musky spot and you can only guess what happened.

Was up on the Big Chip about 10 years ago, fishing with Wayne Gooch. We went to a spot first thing in the morning, where he had raised a big fish the night before. When we got there, there were Suzy feathers all over the surface of the water. Wayne muttered something under his breath, and motored on to the next spot.

One of the coolest things I've witnessed in nature, was while fishing with the Short One, Dave Dorazio, hisself. It was towards sunset, and we were on the east side of the lake. A Suzy was sitting out in the middle of the lake, splashing around, and making a general spectacle of herself. A Bald Eagle passed overhead, circled around to the far west, and swooped down on that hen mallard, right out of the blinding sun. The Suzy never saw it coming, and was in the grasp of razor sharp talons before she could react. She quacked all the way to the nest! Quiet ensued, and feathers were soon filtering down to the water below.
