| This was the second year of the Fargo-Moorhead Muskies Inc. Chapter's on-ice clean up of Detroit Lake. The amount of debris left behind by ice fishermen and others is ridiculous. Last year we found all kinds of stuff, from boards to underwear to too many empty chew containers to count. Enough to fill an entire pickup box.
This year, we found much of the same, along with car rims, and a car hood. We actually filled TWO pickup loads of stuff.
We think this is a good idea, and have even talked about adding more lakes to our list. Maybe other people reading this would like to keep this in mind for next year, and clean up YOUR local lake. It's really not that much work, and makes a big difference. It took 6 guys three hours to collect all the stuff in this photo, and more. We had the use of some four-wheelers, which was nice.
I just thought it was a nice gesture, and looks good for our club. Hope you agree. Thanks.

Location: Minneapolis, MN | I know many would like to see the dark houses get some pressure from the DNR to stop spearing muskies. Any chance next year you could keep track of which houses left the junk and then have the DNR go after them? |

Location: The desert | Very nice work guys. I think all clubs should talk about doing this next year. I know I am going to see if I can round up a few guys to pick up one of the lakes that we fish. Would be nice if people could just pick up after themselves in the first place.

| when I was a kid in the 60's a local bait shop would haul a junk car out on the lake and leave it there,,,then have a contest where people would guess which date in the spring it would fall through,,,of course that all changed with water polution awareness |

| Great job you guys on your efforts with the clean up. Pretty sad to see/hear/read what a lot of people leave out there on the ice.
Back when I used to do a lot of ice fishing, I don't recall seeing that kind of stuff left out on the ice. There were two lakes in Michigan that I'd ice fish and I do remember that the DNR would keep a watch on the dark houses/ice shanties that would be left out on the ice. Not one single ice shantie could be left over night out there without a name and address and reflectors on the shantie. If they found one out there without the required information and reflectors, the DNR would do away with the shantie altogether and remove it from the ice. The in the Spring, when the ice was thinning, if you left your ice shantie out there by accident too long for it to be safe to go out and retrieve or if you just plain left it out there on purpose with the hopes of it becoming your new panfish structure to fish the rest of the softwater season, you can rest assured...either way, you'll be getting a knock on your door from the DNR. They will go out there once the water opens up to retreive those ice shanties and your name will be on the side for them to come find you. Otherwise, you wouldn't even have been able to leave it out there in the first place.

Location: Eau Claire, WI | Great job guys...
I was a scuba instructor for quite a few years, and have been to the bottom of quite a few inland lakes. It is honestly sad when you see how much crap is on the bottom of our lakes. We used to host scuba cleanups as well and bring back more stuff than we could carry in our underwater bags.
When you look at what seems to be an ever increasing lack of ethics on the part of outdoor enthusiast. Can't call them Sportsmen, they haven't earned it. It makes me wonder just how pittyful it is going to be in the future? Bad enough that many don't have respect for others in the outdoors but to disrespect the resource itself.... What a shame.
Again, great job by your group.. |

| Bravo guys.
When I used to ice-fish alot, and I did alot, I was apalled by what pigs some ice-fishermen are....I didn't say ALL, so relax.
Guys would fold up their portables and leave all of their trash behind. More than one time I almost wound up in battles when I politely told the pigs to clean up their mess or send their wives and mothers back.
For some reason, it seems that guys think that it's OK to leave trash on the ice because after the next snowfall or thaw, it magically disappears. The mixture of beer and common sense being what it is, it doesn't surprise me to see some of what was left behind. I'm not complaining about the tip-ups that were forgotten, the augers or even the portable heaters, but the bait containers, snack wrappers, beer cans and bottles, piles of cigarette butts and more. It used to make me sick to see what the lake turned into once the snow all melted.
Great job picking up after others. You should be proud of what you took upon yourselves to do.
Oh, and thank-you.

| Nicely done, Fargo-Moorehead! It's a shame people can't pickup after themselves. Anyone see the pile of Christmas trees on Lake Monona? Was that all good and done on purpose for fish cribs with DNR permission or just a dump spot noone could clean up because the ice was unsafe this year? I thought the city/county was trying to keep organic debris OUT of the system. Can anyone say Phosphorous ban? Not to mention all the tax $$ Madison spends picking that exact type of thing up from the curb. |
