Do you think there is a differance in the power for setting the hook with differant rod types?
For example do you think the extra fast rod could set the hook better than an morderate action rod?
Or do you think there is no differance at all and a rod should be chosen for the type of lures it will be throwing?

I buy rods for the lures that I'm going to throw. I have a couple that are multiple use.

I would think that the line you use may make more of a difference. Mono has close to 27% stretch, while braid is closer to 3%. To me, that would mean you could get away with a moderate action rod when using braided line. Actually, I wonder how many Muskie fishermen still use monofilament line?

Also, to go along with Derrys comment, if you have a heavy action rod the less bend or give the rod will have when you do set the hook. I think it is a personal preference because I know people that like 6'6" rods and people that like 8'0" as well and many of those people won't go back to the rods they first started using.

If you wanna try something pretty cool. Put a lure (one without hooks!!!!) on your favorite combo. Have a friend hold the lure as strong as possible. Then you set the hook. You'll see that the reel has a big part in your hook set which surprises a lot of people. You'll also see that you most likely won't be able to get the lure out of your buddies hand which is also very surprising.

Hope this helps,

fishermuskie, just to clarify, 'action' and 'power' describe two separate things.

Power (ultralight, light, medium, heavy, xheavy, etc) describes how much backbone/stiffness a rod has, that is, how much force it takes to bend it.

Action (slow, moderate, fast, xfast) describes WHERE a rod bends. A slow action rod bends over it's entire length, and looks something like a parabola or 'U' when completely loaded up. As you go towards the other end of the spectrum the bend is confined closer to the tip... a fast action rod has most of it's bend in approx the last 1/3 of the rod, kind of like a 'J'.

Power and Action are independent of eachother: there are light power/fast action rods and light power/slow action rods.

Also, these attributes describe the entire blank, not just the tip or the butt. The phrase 'fast tip' get's thrown around a lot, which isn't really accurate.

Almost all muskie rods have fast or xfast actions (not much variation there), and power ratings from MH to xheavy, but even these ratings vary among manufacturers. Like Raider150 said, most people select muskie rods based on what lures they want to throw. If it wasn't for the size of our lures muskie fisherman could get by w/ much lighter tackle. As far as setting the hook, all things equal theoretically I guess heavier rods will set the hook better because there is less shock absorption and therefore more 'snap' to move the lure and set hooks (however that lack of shock absorption can come back to haunt you on a thrashing fish).

Sorry for the long-winded non-answer to a simple question! In my opinion any muskie rod has plenty of backbone to set the hook as long as the fisherman does his part.

I kind of figured that would be there would no differance between the differant actions, but I figured it would be a good question to ask. Thanks for your opinions.
