| There is a 400 acre lake just outside Cedar Rapids that has been stocked with naturals for about 10 years. This little lake in Iowa has awesome potential.40+ inch fish have been turning up the last few years, but won't survive due to local ignorance and meat hunters. What can I do?I've talked to the local fisheries personnel who are sympathetic to the cause but don't have any ideas either.Last year a number of undersize and legal fish were kept.Local DNR are ,of course, already too thin.Thought about a "KNOW THE DIFFERENCE" sign, but because it is a state park there are numerous restrictions. Also thought about starting a Muskies Inc. chapter here in eastern Iowa.Strength in numbers!!!Having worked in local sporting goods stores for 5 yrs.,I have heard some of the craziest stuff you could imagine."Cut em up for catfish bait" is the prevailing sentiment.A 36" limit means nothing if people don't know what they've caught.Ice out is not that far away and I fear for my babies collective lives.Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. If WE can pull this off, there will be a legitimate resource capable of producing trophies. The fish we've been catching are very fat due to the abundance of shad. Now, we have to let them get a little longer.Thanks. | Education is the only answer, coupled with patience and bolstered by resolve. You will win and lose some, but eventually will get the information out that the Muskies there are a great resource, and should be protected instead of targeted. | |

| Hi,
I think I know the lake you are refering to. I have witnessed the same attitude from the locals this past summer. I had a small fish in the mid 30's blow up on a gambler near an old timer shore fishing. quickly responded to me that if I caught it I should proceed to kill it. I almost crapped my pants. He then proceeded to tell me all they eat are the other game species. I think a muskies inc chapter would definitely help, eastern Iowa needs one anyways, besides the two chapters near Clear Lake. If you have some mail addresses or email links that one could write to help improve the situation please list them. I am sure many will take the time to reply.
