The spring here has been mild & above temps for last week or so here in Central WI (81 degrees right now- X-man's running around outside in shorts!). Tuesday, I went over to the Lemonweir River close to where I live to test drive some new Zam's and some new paint colors/patterns from Stan Durst (very sweet). A relatively small river that is not suppose to have any population of muskies. Although it dumps into the WI river ~ 10 miles via the river path itself from where I was fishing from bank in a small slough that's attached to the river, I had a ~ 40" fish follow deep & couldn't get a look at it. I thought jeez that was a pretty nice northern, but then again I thought she acted like a muskie, all I could see was the top of the fish. About 5 minutes later same thing different lure. Still couldn't get a good look at her.

Went back yesterday at ~ noon. Was casting on the river side of the slough sandbar, relatively low current area where there was some willows & weeds growing in shallow water. Low & behold here comes a pair of fish swimming side by side upstream along the edge of the willows & weeds, dorsal & tail fins sticking out of the water, my mysterious +40" gal & a smaller male ~ 30". They were in less than 12" of water & I was 10' away, water was clear so there was no doubt they were both muskies. They swam past me and turned out into the middle of the river. He was stuck to her like glue. I thought wow now that was cool, what next. So I just stood there for about 5 minutes and here they come again - same exact fish same path. Definitely no doubt about it both muskies.

Very nice to see, but if I caught one how to explain to our local game warden that I'm only testing lures & fishing for pike. Didn't have the camera with me either. Guess now I'll have to find some new waters for spring preseason muskie lure testing. I still have to test drive the muskie lures I got at the shows.

Have fun!
Al
