Greetings,

My dad is looking for a new boat as we speak and is running into some issues with rod storage. He is looking for a v type hull, single console in the 16.5-17' range with rod storage that will store up to 7'6" rods. I will fish with him on occasion, so 8' storage would be a plus. He is having a bit of trouble finding something like this. He likes the style of the Alumacraft Navigator, but the 1750 only has a 7' storage, which is useless to him. He also likes the Fish hawks, but has to jump to the 1850(which he won't do) to get the proper storage. The Alumacraft Tournament series is ok, but he does not like the wide gunwhales associated with it. I know it may seem as though he is picky, but are we missing anyone? Is there something out there suitable? He was going to check Tuffy tommorrow, but I did not see where they had sufficient sotrage in their 16-17's either... If anyone knows of something in the Navigator style(lots of fishing room) with adequate rod storage(at least 7'6") please reply here or drop me an email. I have been out of the boat shopping loop for some time, and am just starting to help him. This should help, as I begin my search next season.

Thanks in advance,

Jason

Check this out.http://www.alumacraft.com/specs/tournpro175cs.html 17.5 ' I thought I saw some Alumacrafts with center rod storage at a sports show this winter too.

OR get some rod savers and strap your longer rods on the side benchs. I've got a 165 CS and that is what I do. I have to put the rods in the vehicle along with the lakewood if I'm afraid of theft . That is the only inconvenience.

Thanks Jim, I will check it out. Right on with the rod savers. I lov those for running from spot to spot. He really wants something that will stow all of his rods for travel and lodging, and doesn;t want to buy something with only 7' lockers if he will not get much use from them(wonder if one could modify them...). Thanks for the link!!!

I fish out of a '05 Navigator 1750 and I can store 8' rods on each side of the rod holder compartments. What's the problem?

The Tuffy Esox Deep-V 1700 has an illuminated 8' center rod locker capable of holding 15 rods. I may have a biased opinion toward the Tuffy, but I think you will find that the 1700 has the most useable space than any other boat in its class. Just a thought.

I have an 05 Navagator 175 and I can fit 8' rods in both rod lockers. Have him take a tape rule to the dealer and check a 2006 model. The specs in the brochure for my 05 said 7' but the rod lockers are open beyond the front deck bulkhead. It is a great multi-species boat. Bob

the Tuffy 1700 will handle 8' rods in the center rod-locker's top row.
that boat seems a lot like what you're describing: 16'10" deep-v, narrow gunwales, proper storage.
worth a look at least.

The Navigators will hold 8' rods, even though the specs say 7'.

Older style Tuffy 1700 Esox Deep V. Awesome boat in that size range. New style Tuffy would work nicely as well.

The new 1700 Esox Deep V Tuffy will take 8 foot rods. At $18999 base on a special promotion for the next few weeks with a 90 OptiMax or Suzuki 4 stroke, it's a good deal, too.

No problem if it does hold them, just that the one dad measured, only held a rod to 7'2". It was an 06. Maybe he measured wrong. Glad to hear it will take 8'ers. You say both sides. There was only one true rod storage cmpartment in the one he checked on and a 'general' storage on the starboard side that he said would be good for extra pfd's, lights, etc. That is good to hear that the tubes hold 8'ers though, and he will be happy to hear it. I'll tell him to take a rod with him today to check them out.

That said, I think he is going to check out the Tuffys as well. That price does sound decent. I told him that I liked the layout of them myself, and would be looking at them next year when buying a new rig, and trying to get the best deal I can from them or Ranger. Dad is a suzuki guy now, so he will like that as well.

One last question. Was the 8' storage, tube storage? Also, Mark, you said the older style was awesome, but the new one was nice. Differences?

The Tuffy 1700 is the the best fishing platform I've ever seen in a 16'10" deep V boat. It's a wave crusher when you need it, but goes right up into less than a foot of water. The rod locker has tube rod seperators and comes in 2 models, the Osprey and the Esox. Both have a huge 52" livewell with a drop in bait bucket. Get in on the Tuffy special while there's some left.

Same with the Fishhawks, at least the 04's and 05's. They listed a 7'6" on the 1750, but I can fit an 8' rod in mine, as the front end of the rod holder is open in the bow of the boat.
