Question about Transport Tournament Wordage.

Subject: Question about Transport Tournament Wordage.

In looking through Mike Roberts' "Muskie Size Limits FAQ" on this site, I noticed the following quote about Transport Tournaments, which require the fish be taken to a registration station.

"Because of the stress involved with transporting the fish, that fish is considered by Law the same as a harvested fish. It must meet the minimum length limits, and is counted towards that angler's daily bag limit".

What does that actually mean? Can you still participate in the tournament after registering a fish, or would registering two fish be harvesting over your limit? Technically. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks.

Exactly as you stated it. Technically, in WI, at least, when you put that fish in the livewell, you are done fishing. Max number of fish that can be registered in a two-man team event is 2.

They get around the "letter" of the law by saying that they are fishing pike when that one angler brings a fish in. If the angler that gets the muskie catches another, the partner registers the fish.

A few years ago they had a tourney on Moose Lake in Saywer County. What the promoter forgot that there are no pike in Moose lake, therefore when one guy registered his fish, he was not allowed to keep fishing for "pike".

A few years before that the same promoter came to us (Cap City MI) with help with his tourney. We said we would if he went to a judge boat format. He declined & so did we. Now, with the chain at 45", he has to have judge boat format to count those over 34" (& under 45) because they can not be placed in the livewell. He had one last year (on each Monona & Waubesa) and it went very well and again he is holding those two again.

Thanks for the replies guys. Regarding the quote I listed above, where does it come from? Is that a DNR statement? Are they pretty much conceeding that fish will expire from being transported in that fashion? If that's the case, it would seem that most people would discontinue Transportation Tournaments. I'm actually not all that hot on judge boat tournaments either, but nobody gets by on their "Word" and a photograph anymore. Political correctness, I guess. Thanks again.

dont think it has anything to do with political correctness but rather the lack of ethics some individuals display, and the lack fo trust that breeds amongst even more people.

Gerard I don't think your answer is 100% correct. I have fished a few of these transport tournies and I had my own personal concerns. I talked to the organizer and he told me that he had permission from the WDNR to have a team transport two fish before that team is done for the day. The angler who caught the first fish could still legally fish until the team had registered two fish, then both anglers are done for the day. We were lucky enough to transfer a few fish in these tournaments and personnally I feel people make way to big of a deal out of the transportation. Our fish all released very well and the organizer told everybody if you didn't feel you could safely transport the fish that he would come to your boat to measure the fish. Judge boat tournaments are not ideal either. I have waited a long time for the judge boat to arrive in the past.

a warden told me that if they saw you put a fish in the live well and reeased it in a decent amount of time they would not ticket you as you did not move the boat. That is as he says an indication you were reviving the fish and no intent to kep it. However if you move the the boat he would consider that a kept fish. Its up to wardens view point I guess.

Chuck I am well aware of what the laws are in Wisconsin....that is why I was concerned before I participated in a transport tourny.
I was just stating what the organizer told me in my post above. Nobody is lieing and saying they are fishing for Pike. If one team member catches both fish, he registers both fish. The WDNR approves these tournaments and I believe that they are well aware of the format of them. The team keeps fishing until two fish have been registered.

It is great to hear that your judge boats arrive swiftly but that is not the case with all judge boat tournaments. I have called for judge boats in two different tournaments and I have waited about 10 minutes each time. I feel that is a bit long. Then the radio "spies" all head to your area, not fun.
