Guys,
Im looking at a really nice fiberglass boat, but it doesn't have a keel guard. I want to get one to play it safe. What do you recommend? I have a dealer near me that installs Hambys, but i don't know what they cost? Are there better alternatives out there. The boat i'm looking at is 17' 8". thanks, PS

Keel Shield and Keel guard are the two brands I've worked with. Both are great products. I'd recommend the dealer install the guard. Cost is somewhere around $250 to $300 retail installed.

Thanks guys,
Just called a dealer near me and he uses Megaware Keel Guards, i guess they bought Hamby's also, but these are a different guard. Everyone says the Hambys are thicker and more expensive, but I don't think there is a dealer near Pittsburgh that is authorized to install them.
They will not let you do it yourself. The megawares are supposed to be high quality also, and they run about $140 + the labor if a dealer installs it.

Guys, I am picking up my first fiberglass boat tommarow before this all I ever owned was aluminum. The boat is only 1 year old and in perfect shape but it does not have a keel protector on it. Would you recomend getting one installed and what purpose to they serve? I realize that they protect the keel incase you beach the boat but are they really neccessary?

I had a keel guard on my Tuffy esox mag... And yes they are necessary, they keep the keel from getting scraped and chipped up
I beached my boat on sand, rocks, gravel and yes it still looked brand new... worth there weight in gold if you ask me just my 2 cents.
