Muskie fishing from the shore

Since I'm new to muskie fishing, I wonder if it's possible to spin fish for them from the shore, using spoons and spinners? Or do you have to use jerkbaits from a boat? Do muskie and pike live together, at the same depth, or are muskies found deeper? Pike fishing from the shore without a boat works just fine, so I'm just wondering.

It is possible to catch muskies from shore, but works even better is a boat launch dock or fishing dock...can get deep or shallow from docks in many cases...caught my biggest deep off a dock. Muskies will go shallow...up to less than a foot of water...so don't be afraid to fish shallow off the shore.

Hi Petey. I can't imagine being satisfied fishing muskies from shore. For most folks they're plenty hard enough to catch from a boat. Consider setting your sights on a small affordable boat, even a cartopper pram is fine, to get yourself on the water. Stick to small lakes and rivers until you trade up to a bigger boat.

Musky fishing from shore is a fun thing to do. Check out small rivers or streams. If you don't believe me ask Howard Wagner!

Hi Petey- Shore fishing for Muskies is great, many members here do it and can give you a lot of advice- including rivers to try. Also if ya really want to get out & don't have a boat- try local Muskie club. There are usually guys who fish alone because they can't find partner on particular date etc. Some clubs even have a "empty spot in the boat list". Pay for half the gas & buy lunch. The guys/gals usually have a bit of money tied up in their rigs. Picking up a share of the operating cost plus lunch will probably get you invited back the next time.

Petey, you can definately fish muskies from shore. I do it most of the time, and catch fish. Fish man hit it dead on, make sure you can release the fish from where you are at. I didn't take his advice on sunday, caught one, and ended up sliding down the bank and into the stream to release the fish. But, I knew that I would have too, but that's where the fish are, just know what your getting yourself into, lol. I haven't had much luck fishing lakes from sure, try to find some small rivers/streams, to wade in, and it can pay big dividends. If you live in PA by chance, I can help you out in that respect. If there are reservoirs where you live, try fishing just below the dams, that has worked for me many times, many fish will go over the spillways, and can be caught right below the dams.

Thanks guys, I appreciate your help! [:)] I just wasn't sure if muskie behave like northerns do, cause I have done quite alot of pike fishing from shore and that works fine (even if using a boat would probably have improved my fishing greatly, but I've just not had enough money for a boat yet). And I wasn't sure how they behave cause I'm in musky deproved Europe now (we only have northern pike of the Esox family here) and planning on relocating to the US (Nebraska), so I don't really know much about them except they seem to be exciting gamefish, just like I know the pike is! I'm working with a guy right now who just relocated from Lincoln, Nebraska to Wis. We have a meeting tomorrow and I will pick his brain for you. He just might know some musky waters from the flat lands.

Thanks Al, that was some interesting links, I liked the story about that record muskie, but too bad the pics were missing. I guess Nebraska isn't the best place in the world for muskie but that record fish wasn't too bad, I wouldn't mind it so to speak! I found a link to the state records of Nebraska, if it's of interest for anyone.

Petey- The "toothycritters " link has a photo-> Father & son holding fish. But it's low quality photo- really nice fish!

Greg: That's okay, thanks for the effort though and yes, the links were good and will be useful! [:)]

Al: I saw three pics on the site, but they were really tiny and hard to tell what they really looked like. But it seems especially that one fish you mentioned was pretty nice, 41 lbs 8 oz, that's not too bad. Too bad I couldn't see it better though. And the story about the 51 ½-inch fish with a 26 inch girth sounds pretty promising too! [:)]

Petey21, LOL- remember- big ESOX species will attack & eat someting equal to ~ 1/3 their length / mass. 60 " fish --> 24" to 30" prey. Hee, hee - hang on!!!!!!!!

Have fun chasing those Nebraska Muskies- if you're coming to Wisconsin let me know as I would be happy to help you out w/ a Wisconsin Muskie Hunt adventure.
