After three spinal surgeries in the last three years I am now officially 100 percent healthy......ok maybe 90 percent because of the 25 pounds I gained from this last one. I had a physical performance test this week to see how much I can lift in different positions and if I'm able to do heavy work for extended periods of time. I passed with flying colors lifting over 100 pounds and lighter amounts over an extended period of time without any pain. Watch out muskie's this year!!! I will finally have a full season and be able to fish whole days again!!

Awesome!!!! The advancements in medicine amaze me everyday. Alot of the credit goes to you though i am sure, I expect you actually did the physical treatment you were expected to. Right in time to go get some 'eyes before the muskie opener too !!!!

I was meticulous with my PT and didn't stray from my restrictions at all. I had the neck surgery on November 15th and was back at work on Jan 9th with restrictions. My coworkers are going to be very glad that I can finally lift again.

Way to go Derek. Glad to hear.
Actually following the doctors orders??? Who da thought. I gotta give you credit for that.
Gotta love it when people complain about not healing fast enough or fully but didn't do a #*^@ thing the doctor or therapists told them to.
I'll be up that way this summer. Maybe we can get together.

Derek,

Glad to hear that the spinal surgeries have helped...maybe I did also??? I work for Medtronic Sofamor Danek which produces spinal implants...pins, rods, screws, etc. That is great news to hear you are back on your feet and these new advances in technology helped a fellow muskie hunter!

MM, glad to hear it.
It's always such a pain....no pun intended....and takes such motivation to keep up with the rehab to get back to feeling good. My wife had 2 anterior fusions in the last 4 years, and if she doesn't do at least 45 minutes on the treadmill in the morning, she will be be in severe pain by the end of the day. They took bone from her hip, so the walking helps that, but if she doesn't exercise, she gets severe head pain too.
They have changed my home therapy program a few times in the last couple of years, and I'm to the point where I can only do stretches and "ball exercises." No extension exercises any more. Bending backwards is off of the program no matter what. Standing upright is exercise enough. I'm back to walking to my daughters school and back for exercise, and that's only 6 city blocks in each direction, but hey, I can walk. I can stand, I can live on my own if I have to. I can get dressed by myself. Those are all plusses in my book. I feel terrible sometimes when I go to the clinic and see people in full body braces, when my only problem is pain. I've taken enough meds to get the entire north side of Milwaukee high, but it still never kills the pain.
I know a while ago someone said that they wished that they only had degenerative disc desease. My last test showed that it got bad enough one level up, that it was tearing the soft tissue in the disc above my highest one because the one below it is collapsing, so the disc will or already has started leaking fluid and this will continue until they find some way to make it stop or find a way to repair the bad ones. I hope they hurry, because I'm getting to the age where I'm going to start shrinking anyway....kind of like Worrall.
I am so glad that there are success stories out there. It gives me hope that one of these days they'll tell me that they've found a way to stop my back from falling apart.
Maybe I'll check into that medicinal marijuana. That way I'm guaranteed to see more fish every time that I go out, even if it's just a trip to the grocery store.
Keep up the good work and stick with the rehab. 25 pounds? That's a lot of titanium!!!
