I bought a used 700 TE...When I press down the casting lever everything is fine...However, when I turn the handle the reel doesn't engage...I have to press the lever forward manually before the reel will engage...Is this normal or does it need to be sent in for repair? Thanks.

I have a 700TE...this is exactly how the reel works..it does NOT flip up by itself..you have flip the little botton back up yourself..or the lever..whatever you call it..
99% of the use my 700TE gets is for casting.. i dont think i have ever trolled it..

your reel is working fine..it's not broke

Thanks TomCat...I wasn't sure...I have a couple of 400TEs, so I wasn't sure ...I bought it for tossing BIG baits...8-12 oz...What do you throw with yours? How do you like it? Thanks.

yo Ignorant...
i have my 700TE paired w/ a custom Grandt Rod...it's 7'6" EXTRA HEavy (almost a tarpon rod really). i throw 10" jakes (i like to twitch/rip the hell out of them), Mag Bulldawgs, pounder bulldawgs, 10" hughes rivers, i guess all sorts of big, heavy gliders...bucktails and spinners with BIG blades (eagle tail size and bigger). with this rod/reel combo, i can and have ripped 10" Jakes for 6 or 8 hours straight. the vast majority of musky fisherman cant really RIP (not just little twitches) 10" jakes or 13" Grannies for hours and hours on end..unless you have a rod/reel that takes all the work out of it. now..the reels weight more..some people in my boat complain some of my set ups are too heavy for them..but they are same people who cant toss eagle tails for 8 hours either..so..whatever.
i toss heavy baits and baits that pull really hard with mine.
i also fish a normal Calcutta 700..i have that on a stout jerkbait rod as well...
the size and weight of the reels never bothered me...i'm married so i whack it alot any my hands are strong!! ha ha ha. Plus, the other reels i use when i'm not using 700's are Abu 7000's. they wieght less than a 700..but really, not the same class of reel..but they are one of my favorities.

Ignorant..pair that 700TE with a long and stout rod...7'6", 8', or 8' 6", extra heavy..not heavy..but extra heavy..then you'll be ready to toss any bait out there...
how do i like it.. i LOVE my 700TE...that's some SERIOUS cranking power for putting some serious action on hard pulling baits. i think the fatigue you save by using this reel more than makes up for it weighing more.

Thanks, Tomcat...I also have a Grandt rod to pair the 700 with and I'm having a 8ft jerkbait rod built on a saltwater blank with a soft tip and that is rated for 8 to 12 oz baits...either rod should work great...I might move the Grandt rod to my trolling rotation for 13 and 14 inch baits...Can't wait to give it a try!!!
