Hi Guys / Gals:

When Trolling how tight / loose do you set the drag? Why?

Should be able to pull it out with about 10lbs pressure or so. I run loose drags because the boat sets the hook. I have ripped lips before, so you dont want to be locked tight or too loose for that matter...

There is a happy [:)] medium.

Hi john, first what kind of line( super lines, low strech or mono) this makes a diference. also the rod action also plays a role. the stiffer the rod and no stretch line the lighter the drag set. on the flip side the lighter the rod and the more stretch in the linr say mono the stronger the drag can be set. jason said it best its a fine line between to tight or to loose. sharpen those hookes and keep the drag a little on the loose side until you get the feel for it. time on the water will tell. good luck.

I set my drags fairly loose so when a fish hits you hear the bait clicker. If you don't a fish can strike and come off easy or you could drag it for some distance. I forgot once and if I was not watching the planer board jerking I would have had no idea there was a fish on.

It should take a little pressure to pull out. The larger the bait the more tension you will need on your drag. You'll have to fool around with it a little. The line needs to slip when a fish hits yet still have enough resistance to have the hook be set.

You need to set your drag so that once you are trolling the line will pull out if you pull your rod forward. It's that easy, at the speeds we troll at the hooks set themselfs so you sure don't want your drag to tight to rip the lures out of your fish.[:sun:]
