I'm reluctant to go to split rings .. but I haven't found a snap I'm happy with either. I've had a few different types open up on me. Ideas?

Have you tried these yet? http://www.stringease.com/ I personally haven't tried them but most comments about them have been very good.

If you have already had a few open up then split rings are the easy answer. They are easy to use and wont open on you. Easy on/off rings are Wolverine split rings. Bucher has good ones but i much prefer the wolverine rings. Your reluctance should end once you try it.

I have had good luck using CoastLock snaps and also the Stay Loc snaps from Stringese. For cranks and jerks I use a splitring. It seems to give the lure more action and I have confidence in them not opening up.

Go with the coastock snap. High tesil strength and they won't fatigue.

I just started making some of my own leaders out of mono and I use bucher split rings to prevent a snap failure or it opening up. The two big name split rings are Bucher and Wolverine, thats what everyone seems to like.

I use berkley crossloks 100lbs and sir patrick coastlocks 100lbs (these won't open, and you need to put some serious pressure on it to change lures). I don't know if you guys can get the latter ones.

Has some really nice leaders with the OLD.. Berkley cross locks. Steve Cady and myself saw them at the show.. and yes.. no doubt they were the old cross locks we all used to love.

I still use snaps. For three reasons: 1) I'm too impatient to take the time to switch baits when using split rings, 2) not all lures work well with split rings in the eyelets or the eyelets themselves are not large enough for a strong split ring to fit into and 3) With my radical twitching style I've had LOTS of splitrings disconnect from my lures. Nothing worse than twitching in your favorite Deep Diving Slammer custom weighted to slowly sink.... and have your split ring untwist from your light-wire leader (I never use more than 100# wire). The small diameter wire can easily work its way into a split ring and eventually twist off.

Yes, I've lost fish to snaps opening up.... but not since I began using the Stringease snaps. I use the smallest size they make too. Very small, thin wire... but they will not open. Beat them up for a few days... then replace with a new one if it looks questionable. I've found that the increased action I get from a lure using a light wire leader with a snap that weighs less than a standard splitring and the fast, easy bait change a snap offers is worth the perceived risk of using snaps. In a few cases, I will use a heavier snap... but usually on the real large lures that can handle the extra weight.

Just my opinion on a very controversial subject. There are lots of different beliefs.... and most are valid. This discussion was not actually a snaps vs. split ring topic (I apologize for my lecture on that).... so my vote for a quality snap is the stringease. I've had way too many stainless steel coastlocks open up on me over the years.... and on some nice fish too.

I use the Berkely Croosslock snap. One can now get a generic model from Stamina. This is by far the strongest design, and CANNOT open under pressure!

Go with Stringease, I think they are the best snap on the market.

I switched to them after a more traditional design opened up on me while landing a nice muskie...

They have yet to fail me, and I think they are nearly impossible to break...

Some of you WI guys should remember the Duke snap made in Amery WI. Far and away the best snap ever invented. Duke has left us now so the snap may be a thing of the past, but I think his son still has all the fixtures and bending tools to make them. By the sound of things on the board maybe we should try to resurect this fine piece of terminal hardware. I think that I will look into this in greater detail. I will bring a couple to th MN Expo and leave them at the Muskiefirst booth for all to look at. Maybe someone can figure out how to make them.
